Hawaii is Talking the Talk

Looks like June Jones and the U of H are mixing up OSUs over on the islands. Say it with me OREGON STATE not OHIO STATE.

June Jones: Bring on the best - starbulletin.com

At his weekly news conference yesterday, Jones addressed a comment he made after Saturday's victory over Purdue about being able to beat top-ranked and undefeated Ohio State.

[...]

Hawaii (10-2) leads the nation in scoring, total offense and passing offense. UH quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison -- not known for hyperbole -- said the Warriors offense "might be the best ever in college football."
Confidence is not lacking over there. But are they serious? Best offense ever? Beat Ohio State? Come on now. You've clearly lost 2 games this season and Ohio State hasn't lost yet. First they better be thinking about the other OSU. That would be Oregon State. I have a feeling that many Hawaii-based players on Oregon State's roster may think this is as big as the Civil War.

BTW, is this their RB? Wow, Nate Ilaoa is a big dude. He's gonna run over someone in our secondary at least once.

Clearly we're the underdog in this game for good reason. But I don't think we can count out the Beavs yet. If we can slow them down at all, then we have a chance. Plus, I think we will be in the right mindset in this game. There's too many Hawaii guys on the team to let people have a let down. At least that's what I hope will happen.

On a side note, did anyone else feel like the media was focusing on the Ducks a little too much after the Civil War. It's almost like they were surprised the Beavers won. Or maybe the Beavers didn't win, the Ducks lost. B.S. OSU dominated the first half and probably outplayed them in the 3rd quarter. Plus, the Ducks were a poorly blown whistle away from a fumble recovery for a TD which would have eliminated any chance of a comeback by the Ducks. Plus, Matt Moore engineered a great drive to get the game winning FG. Yet, all the talk is about Bullotti and the Ducks. Whatever. Give the Beavs their props. They are the best team in the state this season.

first i'd like to say i think you guys have a great team! and believe me we are plenty worried.
you didn't beat USC and oregon by accident. yes, we can score a lot of points. but i'm more concerned about our defense being able to stop you.
take the over in this one. it should be a memorable shootout!

I agree, it should be a great game. A shootout would be fun. I'm not sure we can keep up with you guys unless we force a few turnovers and maybe score on one.

Oregon State (8-4) at Hawaii (10-2), 12:00 EST, ESPN, Saturday, December 2
Why to watch: There’ll be no bowl berths or conference championships at stake, however, if you can hang around past midnight, this has the potential to be the most entertaining game of the weekend. There’ll be five games on Saturday pitting teams ranked in the BCS Top 25, and surprisingly, this is one of them. There’ll be plenty of offense and a fair amount of intensity at Aloha Stadium since Oregon State has a dozen players from Hawaii on its roster. The Beavers, which are the only team to beat USC this year, have already clinched a berth in the Sun Bowl, while Hawaii has won nine straight scoring at least 41 points in each. A win over a quality Pac-10 team would give the program some of the national respect it hasn’t yet earned since the best win so far was over Purdue. Oh, and then there’s QB Colt Brennan, the Warriors’ improbable Heisman contender, who’s just three touchdowns away from tying David Klingler’s NCAA mark of 54 touchdown passes in a season.
Why Oregon State might win: The Beavers run of at least 30 points in four of the last five games won’t end this week versus a Warrior D that’s 95th nationally in total defense and particularly leaky against the pass. Last weekend, Purdue went 30-of-43 for 382 yards with five touchdown passes, a preview of what Matt Moore will do with Sammie Stroughter and Joe Newton at his disposal. Unlike the Boilermakers, which really didn’t want to make this trip for more than an extra bowl-type vacation a week after ending the Big Ten season, Oregon State is motivated to shine in one of its fertile recruiting areas.
Why Hawaii might win: Once this Hawaii offense got humming in mid-September, no one has been able to stop it. Purdue had the Warriors cornered for three quarters before springing a leak and allowing 22 points over the final 11 minutes. Brennan has masterfully run June Jones’ system, getting six and seven receivers involved in every game and making plays with his legs when the pocket shrinks. The Warrior O-line allows just one sack every 29 passes, which will really matter against sack-happy Oregon State.
Who to watch: With Brennan and all those receivers making headlines, it’s easy to lose sight of Hawaii RB Nate Ilaoa, a 5-9, 240-pound bulldozer that’s equally effective running the ball as he is swinging out to catch passes. Ilaoa leads the Warriors with 1,559 total yards and is tied for sixth nationally with 17 touchdowns.
What will happen: Oregon State has the balance on offense and quickness on defense to go stride-for-stride, but this is a special Warrior team that’s been a terror at home this season. In a last-team-to-have-the-ball type game, Hawaii will try to pull out another thriller late in the fourth quarter. This time, it’ll face a team with just enough defense to come up with a final stop.
CFN Prediction: Oregon State 48 … Hawaii 41 ... Line: Hawaii -9
