LaGarrett Blount Goes Off the Reservation - What Should the Punishment Be?

LaGarrett Blount actually didn't kick some BSU ass. Just not how we all thought he would.

Here's the end of the Oregon Ducks 19-8 loss to the Boise State Broncos last night:

Watch halfway through. He actually has to be restrained from going into the stands. Wow.

So, what should the punishment be? 1 game? 3 games? 6 games? The season?

That was pretty bad, blatant, and caught on video. If it was merely the punch, chalk it up to one bad decision. Maybe 1-3 games. But tack on the almost going into the stands (REALLY poor judgment) and the fighting with his own players and I have to think it should be at least 5-6 games. Imagine if that Coach wasn't there and he made it into the stands ala Ron Artest? Would that be the season right there? I would hope so. The fact that he REALLY tried to get into the stands has to make the suspension big. He's a menace to society!

What do you think?

Totally and completely agree! We sat there in shock, watching what was going on and not thinking it was actually happening. And then he started going after his own teammates and then almost went into the stands??? Totally uncalled for - should be suspended for the rest of the season. And of course the Duck announcers try to spin it and put the blame on Boise State fans. Everyone was fired up, but only Blount got physical. I'm sure each side had just as much harrassing going on as the other. Stay Classy Ducks. Stay classy

It will be interesting to see how UofO handles the situation. He was barely able to make it back on the team for some poor off the field judgment. I would like to see at least a 3 game suspension but would not be surprised if it ends up being the whole season before it is over.

Honestly, it doesn't matter how bad the BSU fans were. If you are a player, you CANNOT go into the stands. Don't even think about it for a second!

I hope he doesn't have a twitter account...

The way Duck fans are talking, sounds like they want a season long suspension.

Good for you Duck fans.

He is done. He will be lucky not to get charged by the Boise Police. What an idiot, to punch his opponent, then his teammate, then go after the fans. It is no secret that LaGarrett is no rocket scientist, but wow, he showed how much of a thug he is. Side note, Darren Thomas was talking smack to a fan all night saying "Ill see you after the game" when the fan was doing some mild, typical heckling. Long season ahead there Chip.

Season long suspension. He is a thug, plain and simple. If he is unable to keep his head over trash talking, part of the game, then he has no business getting paid millions to play on Sunday. Blount was handed everything and threw it away, disgusting.

I am a huge Duck fan from near Chicago but I will throw out my fitted oregon hat if Blount isn't removed from the team.

You guys are stupid. Season long suspension??? you're kidding right. He'll get 1 game. All he did was punch a D-End that deserved it. The Boise coach didn't even try to defend his own player because he knew he deserved it. Hey, he's the only person on the Ducks offense that even cared about the game. Players punch each other all the time, that doesn't merit a season long suspension. As for going in the stands you're forgetting one thing: HE DIDNT GO IN THE STANDS

Dan,

Maybe Ducks punch teammates (perhaps why UO practices are closed) but Beavers (and the rest of the teams in this nation) do not. It wasn't a "hold me back" routine as Jim Rome said, he didn't go in the stands because he had a hoard of guys on him. He is a trash talking hot head who shames the sport. He is a thug and a season long suspension is what he deserves.

Dan,
It was an illegal act - assault.
This is not the first time he has had control issues - he was suspended and UO didn't want to enter the season without him and he was allowed to try and be an evolved human being... failure. It was a disgraceful thuggish cheap-shot. If the university wants to make the statement that this b.s. is intollerable, he'll be gone. I do hope that as part of his sentence (yes he will be arrested) he gets counselling and a drug test.

Dan,

This isn't a court of law. It has as much to do with the reputation of Chip Kelly (new coach), Mike Bellotti (new coach), the new Pac-10 commish, and the image of the university.

The fact that he didn't make it into the stands is irrelevant. In fact, if he does only one of the 3-4 things he did after the game (punch, fight with teammates, try to attack fans, fight with police/security) he doesn't get as harsh of treatment. But you have to look at the whole incident and treat it accordingly. Tack on the fact that this isn't the first suspension he's had at the U of O and I think the season long suspension is justified.
