Bernard passes torch to Rodgers, Beavs beat Terps

OSU beat Maryland last night in a game that wasn't especially exciting for the neutral viewer. But for Beavers fans it was just fine. Sure, we were all cringing every time a QB dropped back to pass. But every time James Rodgers or Yvenson Bernard touched the ball something good happened.

It was like the past and future meeting up for a game. Yvenson Bernard handing the torch to James Rodgers. Both guys had over 100 yards rushing and combined for all of the Beavers TDs. And we needed all those yards because the QBs we a little shaky.

How about that Beaver D? Back to their late season form allowing only 19 yards rushing. And only 11 first downs. Wow.

The penalties and turnovers made for a sloppy and frustrating game, but a win is a win. The Beaver fans represented (9000 offical tickets sold, how many more in the stadium?). That will be great for future bowl games.

Some post-game thoughts:

* Maryland had some serious cheap shots all game. What was that about? We're they trying to channel the USC trojans? That was something I didn't expect.

* That last drive was money. Up by a TD. On your own 1 yard line. Oh, just drive the length of the field and kill the game. Nice.

* The Oregonian's coverage was a bit strange, eh? Between Canzano putting doubt in to Beaver Nation about Jaquizz and Ken Goe complaining about our bowl game (talk to the Pac-10, not us) it was a strange postgame day. Does Goe think we pick which bowl we want to go to?

* I'm gonna miss this defense. I'm gonna miss Yvenson Bernard. Thanks seniors!!!

You would like to see both teams play their best and hope the Beavers come out on top. The Emerald Bowl game was frustrating to watch as a Beavers fan. It was obvious that both teams had a long layoff, with the penalties and rusty play; the refs were a bit rusty as well.

In the first quarter it was beginning to look a lot like the Cincinatti game, or the second half of the UCLA game, where the game fell apart. One surprise was the Beavers inability to protect the passer, or were those coverage sacks? After all, the Beavers were without their most experienced receiver. An ESPN announcers called the Canfield interception one of the worst passes in NCAA history, or something similar. The Terps did get to the passer mighty quick though, especially when Maevao was knocked on the elbow. What's a Terp, a turtle? Those pass rushers were not slow. I didn't realize there was a team with a sillier mascot than a duck or a beaver (other than the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs).

Those Emerald Nuts commercials were a hoot. They certainly were off the wall. What was with the Devo looking girl rock band? And, the Norwegian archery coach. Now he could play through some pain.

There were plenty of bright spots for the Beavers, despite the passing game. Yes, I would agree, the defense was fun to watch. And on offense Rodgers and Bernard were unstoppable. A win is win in the end.

P.S.

I've got to say something about the Emerald Bowl. There was plenty of room on the other sideline to split the teams up. So, you don't sell some of the seats at field level, it wasn't a sellout anyway. And, those short runways outside the end zone could get someone hurt. But, we probably don't have anyone capable of running a fade route, since Rodgers is so short.

The faulty shot clock hurt the Terps, and the refs didn't help by not telling their quarterback how they would count it down, and then penalizing them for delay of game! Those guys probably couln't move the ball anyway. I sure am glad Canfield didn't have to deal with it though. If you guys at the Emerald Bowl read this (fat chance), if you're going to host a bowl game, you gotta do better than that.

While surfing on the Net I found your blog, I stopped at it to have a rest and I explored it. There is interesting stuff displayed. Now I continue my surfing…
Make a stop at my blog, if you wish. Ciao.

Yea, I agree the game wasn't quite as solid as the last few years.

I'd say all Beaver fans should be happy this season. For as bad as our offense was this season, I'd say we had a GREAT year. Let's hope the passing game grows a ton in the off-season.

Good win. Great season. Now let's hope the basketball team can pull a Trailblazers-esque turnaround.

I vote that Sean McDonough is never allowed to do another Beaver game - -period.... strike that, never allowed to do any football game ... strike that, never allowed to commentate - period.

Yea, Sean had some strange comments. I think that's the first time in 5-6 years that I've heard about "the streak". You'd think it wouldn't be even a story at this point.
