Article on former Beaver Jason Fyda

From the "where are they now" department, I happened upon an article about new NAU starting offensive lineman Jason Fyda. He transferred from OSU last season after dropping to 3rd string on the depth chart.

Fresh Start

After reading the story, it seems like a bit of an overreaction by Fyda. I mean if you get demoted because of a bad play, talk to someone about it. Work so hard that they can't help but to put you in the game. Don't quit. I bet the coaches were probably trying to light a fire under him to get him to reach his potential. And so he goes home a week later. There must be something else going on there that isn't being reported.

That's just my take.

He has the same reason why I quit the football team. I got demoted for being offsides and I quit the next day. This was back in 1997 though. :)

There was nothing else going on besides being demoted. From what I've heard when you try and talk to the coaches and they avoid you that sounds like a coaching problem.

Perhaps. To me that still sounds like there's only one side of the story. I don't think the coaches will be talking about it soon.

There's always a tendency for someone to leave out details when they don't make them look good. Don't you think Fyda could be leaving out a few details?

I don't know how many people are going to read this post this late, but this is Jason Fyda. Although most of the events that happened at osu are water under the bridge now i wanted to clear the air on what happened, the events after the LSU game were only the culmination of a lot of events that caused me to leave osu. I had earned starting spots more than one time if you go back and look at depth charts from the past, only to be removed from these starting spots because a coach had a wild idea to put another guy from another position into my spot, meanwhile i would get moved back to center, then i would get a few reps here and there at both guard spots, i was never able to have a concrete position, although i do like the idea that i was a versatile player and could play multiple positions, at one point i had to play scout d-line before the lsu game because of the poor ability to recruit young d-tackles. I was told that my 8-10 reps per practice were adequate enough for me to be competing meanwhile these 8-10 reps were spread thin due to playing three positions. I just got sick and tired of riding that emotional roller coaster, football was and still is my love and passion in life and for someone to take that away after i had the highest grade of all the other linemen that played in the lsu game by demoting me to third string scout offense for a true freshmen, who i will not argue is a good player but was in no way ready to play in a div 1 college football game, was the most demoralizing and humiliating things i have ever had to endure in my life, when i talked to the coaches the only knock on my play was that i jumped offsides, and trust me i am not the first nor the last osu football player to commit that foul. I understand now as well as i did then that my mistake was very costly, but i wonder what mike really thought of all the other mindless penalties that did not occur in the heat of the battle i.e. unsportsmanlike conduct, holding ( a lazy ass penalty) as well as just dumb blunders ie missing three extra points, fumbling the ball, throwing an interception are these infractions more tolerable than a five yard penalty that incurred because i was ready to knock my opponents block off, i dont think so any other football coach in the country would not be happy with my penalty but they would be thrilled to see my aggressiveness on the field, after all football is an aggressive sport not the ball room dancing that it has turned into.

Jason seems to lay it all on the coaches, I am not saying that he deserved to be demoted, but it does seem he was a bit thin skinned and also wants to comment on mistakes of other players. I think he should have left all that out. I can understand the unhappiness of not getting enough reps at your #1 position, but did he give the coasching staff enough time to work that out? Maybe he has a point, but it is lost in the expanation that he gave IMO. If all football players reacted this way half of all the teams in the country would be transferring to other Universities.

I appreciate the comments from Jason, and I agree that that must have been an extremely frustrating situation for him. But c'mon now ...can you say "run on sentence"?

Anyway, I hope the NAU situation worked out, or is working out, better for him. The fickleness of coaches continues to amaze me.

I think he's right about football becoming ballroom dancing...under Mike Riley's direction at least.

4th and 1 in one of the biggest games in Oregon State history. You jump off sides?? Trust me I know the real reason...I happened to be just a few feet away.

Hey Jason,

Don't take anyone who would post Anonymously too seriously :)

Thanks for coming in here and telling your side of the story. I for one would never blame you for the LSU loss. Sure, that 4th and 1 hurt, but the extra points hurt more.

I for one was disappointed to see you go, thus the post about why you would leave so quickly after getting demoted.

All in all, thanks for being a Beaver and contributing what you did. Good luck next season man.

Sure the offsides on 4th @ 1 hurt, the extra points (missed) hurt, giving up the game winning drive with a minute or less left in the game hurt. They all hurt, they were all preventable, and each was equally attributable to the loss.
So for anyone to try to pin the loss on someone else is not right.

I especially dislike blaming the kicker. The odds on hitting the goal posts twice in one game are extremely low. But to hit them twice and also miss the third pk is as remote a possibility as there is.

In my view, if Osu doesn't let LSU score that last TD then it doesn't matter if Serna had missed ALL of his pk's. Let's see...seconds left in the game, you know they're going for the endzone, but you let the reciever get 3-4 yds behind you. Lots of finger pointing was done, but bottom line they were all equal to blame.
