The Beavers Drivers to Success

From watching the Mike Riley-coached teams the last few years there are a few things that seem to be predictors of how the teams will do from season to season.

1. Experience or poise at QB

2. Cornerbacks

3. Offensive line

Generally if the Beavs have one of these three things very strong, then they will be a bowl team. If they have two, then they're pretty good. Three and they will have a shot at the Rose Bowl.

This means that every 2-3 years we will be a work in progress at QB. So those will likely be down years.

When Canfield and Moevao we being broken in we were lucky because the defense was great and the running game had a wrinkle that couldn't be stopped called the Fly Sweep. 2 of 3 and we were pretty good.

The last two years the CBs have been experienced, we had two poised QBs, and the running game was strong. Rose Bowl shot.

This season? We may have 0 of 3.

The good news? Next year I think we will have 2 of 3. Katz will be experienced and better and I think the O-line will be a priority and be much better. The only question for me is how fast they can re-make the defense.

Yes, the season has been tough. Yes, the schedule is brutal the rest of the way. And yes, the team is probably in the dumps as much as you were this weekend.

Now is the time for Beaver Nation to be adults and support these kids (yes, they are just kids)! We need to pick them up and let them know we are behind them 100% no matter what happens.

Huge Game This Week!

Every week is a huge game in the Pac-10, but this game against Cal is extra big. Win and we setup nicely for a decent stretch run. Lose, and it gets dicey.

Looks like I'm going to miss this one to be up in Seattle and welcome my new niece into the world so I need every to be loud!

Beavers Season Still In Doubt

Ahhh, the season that could have been. And technically, still could be.

After a gut check loss to Washington last Saturday, the Beavs have a string of must win games to ensure another trip to a bowl game.

Here's the season schedule for the remainder of the season:

Oct. 30th - Cal
Nov. 6th - at UCLA
Nov. 13th - WSU
Nov. 20th - USC
Nov. 27th - at Stanford
Dec 4th - Oregon

At 3-3 and 2-1 in the PAC-10, and with the rest of the schedule back-loaded against the toughest teams, the Beavers have to beat Cal, UCLA, and WSU. And after last weekend, that may not be the easiest of tasks.

I say "Oh, the season that could have been" because if we beat UW, then we have a good shot at being undefeated in the Pac-10 going to Stanford on the 27th. And even if we lost that game, we would still have a shot at the Rose Bowl again if we could upset Oregon. Now, its a tough road to the Rose Bowl this season.

On the other hand, if we use the UW game as a learning tool and improve over the next month, its still possible to only have one loss going into Stanford. Huge, tough game but clearly it won't have been the first and we wouldn't be scared or overmatched. Its a game the Beavs could win.

What I'm saying is, while I'm disappointed that we didn't pull that win out all is not lost for this season.

Anyone Else Worried About The Beavers?

I understand we have played a pretty tough schedule to date so our numbers aren't going to look as good as most teams early in the season. But I'm worried about the Beavs.

Things that make me concerned:

* The defense (458 yds/gm - 2 sacks - 59% 3rd down conversion rate)

* Only 483 yards passing (161 yds/gm)

* No receiver really stepping up (none over 40 yds/game or more than 3 catches/game)

* Zero 4th quarter points in 3 games

Silver Lining:

* Katz isn't turning the ball over

* We still can use the wildcat (wild beaver) and seem to be OK on the ground

* Our special teams play is saving our butts

* We've been here before

Big game this week people. The last three years we win this game. This may go a long way to defining the season.

Come on Beavs! We need this one!

Blue Turf Installed on the Oregon State Beavers Practice Field

After seeing the photos and video of the OSU practice field being painted blue I had to go check it out for myself. Turns out I wasn't the only one who was curious.

Overall, I'm happy they did it and I say do whatever it takes. Its a huge game and we should treat it as such. Shock the world Beavers!

Louisville Post-game Thoughts

A win is a win.

Being 0-2 going to Boise St. would be a disaster. I'm disappointed that 35-14 didn't turn into 52-21 or something, but oh well. Louisville may turn out to be OK. Maybe even threaten a bowl game.

I think the reason most people aren't happy with it is because of what Oregon is doing and to a lesser extent, Stanford. They are running up scores and appear to be in mid-season form. And we want to see that from our team. Well, you don't get it both ways. If you want OSU to schedule tough in the preseason, then don't expect massive blowouts.

Quick Hits and Silver Lining:

* The Beavers are going to lead the nation in lost helmets. They are on pace for an all time NCAA record. Keith Pankey is clearly the leader on the team in this category and could single-handedly shatter the record by game 5.

* Lots of new players on D. I'm totally lost on who is in on tackles until the turn their back to the camera/jumbotron.

* Zero offensive turnovers in the first two games. That's new for early in the season with a new QB.

* The defense is forcing turnovers. That's important if they're going to give up yards.

* The offense finally realized that the path to greatness goes through Jaquizz Rodgers. Run the ball on first down more please.

* Field position is really important. Our offense started in our own end-zone three times and really struggled there. They seemed to always start at the 40.

Anyways, on to Boise St. Hopefully we can shock the world. Gameday will be there and the game will be on ABC!

Oregon State Beavers Gameday Experience - Parking and Tailgating

When you come to an OSU Beavers football game, where do you park? Where do you tailgate? I'll offer up some of my thoughts, and I'd like Beaver Nation to chime in and let me know your favorite spots. This post is the first in a series that I'll post on the game day experience and how to make it awesome even if you're a first timer.

Parking

There are quite a few places to park and it can get pretty overwhelming. Here are a few I've tried or know of. Please leave a comment if you have thoughts or additions.

* Oregon State University Campus

Many of Oregon State's lots are reserved for BASF donor parking. However, there are a few lots that you can get in off Monroe Ave. that are $10 to park (not too far to walk). The lots closer to Reser Stadium bump up to $20 a spot.

OSU has put together a nice parking map showing lots color coded by price and location on campus:

Not sure how the tailgating is on all those locations, but if you get there early enough, many lots have alleys or grassy areas to set up. If you're not big on tailgating and don't mind a bit of a walk, Monroe Ave. has tons of great restaurants and a little shopping to hang out before and after the game.

There are other places that you can park that are very close or have shuttle access.

* Downtown

Parking downtown is convenient and there is a shuttle to Reser Stadium to take you to and from the game. There are tons or great food, shopping, and kids play options downtown. However, there isn't any tailgating. Another downside is the buses tend to get caught in traffic going downtown after the game, so don't expect a speedy exit.

* Avery Park

Avery park is just across Highway 20/34 from campus. Its a really quick walk to the stadium and has tons of grassy areas and great tailgating spots. Its usually about $10 to park and would be great for a big group. Its not really close to much in the way of restaurants or shopping, but there are a few really great kids play areas and playgrounds and a rose garden to enjoy. Getting out after the game is actually not too bad as well. If you're going home to Eugene this would be ideal if you need to get home after a game semi-quickly.

* Benton County Fairgrounds

The Benton County Fairgrounds has a HUGE parking lot with room for RVs and plenty of cars. So this would also be great for a big group. There is a shuttle to and from Reser Stadium. There isn't really any food/shopping within walking distance (a mini-mart), but it would be great for tailgating. I've never parked here so I'm not sure about traffic, getting out, etc.

* Private Lots

I don't have any secret lots, but I know business owners and home owners all around campus tend to have parking available for a price. If anyone has some good spots, let me know and I'll list them here. I'd like this to be a growing document.

Tailgating

The first option is to just setup next to your car/RV and go for it. I've seen some pretty amazing setups around campus. Satellite TV, massive BBQ, and countless games like washers, ladder toss, beer pong, and more. If you've never really tailgated, then find a friend who has done it for a while and invites a few people and enjoy.

If you aren't into tailgating or just want to experience Corvallis or the game day festivities, here are some other options:

* Fan Fest

Fan Fest sets up 3 hours prior to kickoff and is a fun time for the kids. There around a bunch of bounce house type structures and sports games. There's also a fan shop and the pregame show going out there. Definitely worth checking out if you have kids.

* Beaver Walk

From the official site:

Approximately 2 hours before each home game, the entire team and coaching staff will walk through the Fan Fair, accompanied by the band, cheerleaders, and Benny. Keep the tradition alive!

* OSU Alumni Center

The Alumni center is a good place to eat and drink beer before the game. its right across the street from Reser Stadium and has decent food options (not just burgers) and usually a good beer on tap (microbrew). It costs $5/person to go inside, but the outdoor eating area on the south side is free.

* Restaurants

I'll admit I haven't done much of this in Corvallis so I'm not sure where the hot spots are pre-game. I generally tailgate or go to the Alumni Center for pre-game. However, as a local I would recommend trying these places:

Monroe Avenue:

Clodfelter's - Burger joint with good beer, TVs, and has been around forever. Good local place.

McMenamins - If you live in the Pacific NW you know about MeMenamins. Cool decor and games. Decent beer and food.

Downtown

Block 15 - Great new brewpub in town. Great beer and food. A bit small, so stake your claim early.

Flat Tail Brewery - Great Beavers decor. Lots of flatscreen TVs. Good beer. Great fries. On the waterfront.

University Hero - An awesome local Beaver themed sandwich shop. They server beer and have TVs too!

Any other spots you like? I plan on doing a guide just for food, so look for that coming up.

Quick Thoughts On Louisville - Game Replays Available To Watch On ESPN3

Thanks to ESPN3 you can do some scouting of Louisville for the upcoming game this weekend. I've watched a quarter or two and was pretty unimpressed.

Some things I've gleaned:

* The quarterback likes to run and is pretty good doing it. Their offense is reminiscent of TCUs from the little I saw. Good running game, ok passing game. Sometimes bordering on bad.

* The offensive line is experienced and seems pretty good. Four seniors and a sophmore center who started as a freshman.

* The defense doesn't look very good. They have guys that look the part, but didn't seem to get it done on the field. They didn't have a sack against Kentucky.

The Beavers Running Game Isn't Dead Yet

Jaquizz Rodgers

While watching the TCU game I felt that the coaches should've run the ball more often because it seemed like we were getting good yardage. I know mixing it up is good, but I like to see runs on 1st or 2nd down when he's rolling regardless.

A quick look at the drive charts in the second half showed:

2nd and 10 at ORST 13 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 8 yards to the OrgSt 21.
2nd and 10 at TCU 17 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 15 yards to the TCU 2 out-of-bounds for a 1ST down.
1st and Goal at TCU 1 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 1 yard for a TOUCHDOWN.
1st and 10 at ORST 28 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 7 yards to the OrgSt 35.

4th Q

1st and 10 at ORST 26 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 4 yards to the OrgSt 30.
2nd and 6 at ORST 30 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 5 yards to the OrgSt 35.
3rd and 1 at ORST 35 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 3 yards to the OrgSt 38 for a 1ST down.
3rd and 10 at ORST 38 Jacquizz Rodgers rush for 7 yards to the OrgSt 45.

Its not a big sample size, but I think we were wearing their defense down. I think he would have excelled on that last drive and would have been key. In fact, instead of a pass play I think the first play should have been run. We had 4 minutes left so there was plenty of time.

Anyways, I think the running game will be fine. The key is just getting Jaquizz the touches he needs to be successful and do his thing.

Have Patience Beaver Fans, We've Seen This Script Before

Take a deep breath and just relax about the Oregon State football team's performance last Saturday in Dallas.

We've seen this script before. In the past I think the situation has been much more dire. After getting blown out 40-something to 14 nothing appears to have gone right. Sure, the score could've been much worse. But that it wasn't is a good sign. These guys aren't giving up.

Some food for thought:

* The coaches have proven they can improve the team from these kinds of games fairly quickly.

* Katz is already ahead of other first time QBs we have experienced in recent years.

* There is a lot of young talent on this team.

* The older guys are solid leaders.

* They coaching staff and players never get too high or low. Some people think this is a liability. I think its key in these kinds of situations.

I remember years past where we were complaining about the LBs being slow or the O-Line not run blocking. The coaches generally got the kids coached up for the Pac-10 and changed things to open things up (fly sweep, wildcat, etc). I wasn't that impressed with the Pac-10 teams I saw over the weekend.

So don't be too hard on the kids and coaches after this loss and root them on against Louisville for a big win. Then maybe, just maybe we can pull off something amazing at Boise St. I mean, it has to happen eventually, right?

TCU Postgame Thoughts and Links

Tough loss last night against TCU. I'm proud that we hung in there and had a chance to win or at least tie in the 4th quarter. We were dominated pretty well, but somehow kept hanging around. Overall it was a pretty good performance by the Beavers and I think we can all come away thinking we could have won with just a couple of plays going our way.

I think the biggest bummer is that we didn't take our shot at the end. The safety was such a bummer. I want us to go down swinging, not with a wimper. It was a tall order, but a huge potential learning experience and confidence builder for Ryan Katz that went down the drain.

Rather that dwell on the negative, here's some positives:

* Our secondary looks solid this year. Mitchell had to make a ton of tackles, which is bad, but we did backup our LBs well. Hardin looked good after getting burned once in the first half. Tuamani looked better than years past.

* Katz played pretty well. I thought he was over excited early on and over threw the ball a lot, but overall he played great on the big stage. His long ball is awesome and will give a new dimension to the team this year that Canfield couldn't do as well last year. He just needs to learn to dump the ball off to Quizz a bit more and take a little off the short throws and things will be great. No interceptions is good (despite a couple of close calls). And I liked his running and escapability.

* The D Line will get sacks this season. They pressured pretty well, but lost containment on a running QB which is very bad. Not sure if they are really up to stopping the run. But there was a lot of option and misdirection, so it was hard to tell.

* The stats were pretty lopsided, but if the Beavers drive 80 yards at the end and don't give the ball back, things look a lot closer. They played better, but towards the end I think we should have run more often because Jaquizz was starting to get rolling. Oh, and how is it that Gary Patterson gets to decide if the roof is open? That hurt us I think.

Overall, it was a positive game for the Beavers despite the loss. I want to shock the world against Boise St!

Katz has presence. He's a leader. He made no excuses. He accepted responsibility. He looked and sounded every bit the part of a guy who understands that his performance is the difference between a Las Vegas Bowl and a Rose Bowl. And if you'd have stepped into the TCU locker room after the game, you might have heard safety Tejay Johnson talking about Katz's arm. After all, Johnson's coach harped all week that Katz had the strongest arm they'd see all season.

"I was a little surprised," Johnson said. "When I saw him throw that corner route, I realized he had a stronger arm than what I thought he had."

A Look at Oregon State's First Opponent - TCU Horned Frogs

TCU had one of the greatest seasons by a non-BCS team ever last season (#4 according to this). Ranked #6 at the end of the season and only a Boise St. loss could taint that dominant year.

This season they are ranked about #6 in nearly every preseason poll. They return 54 lettermen and 17 starters. Including their mass of great RBs and their QB who was the MWC offensive player of the year.

The only potential weakness might be on D where they lost All-American DE Jerry Hughes, one of their 2 starting LBs, and 2 starting DBs in their unique 4-2-5 defensive system.

2009 TCU Stats

Offense

Their offense was good last year. The passing game was good if not stellar (217 ypg), but the running game is scary. 3100 yards and 35 TDs shared among about 7 guys. 4 of whom are back and as good as ever...

*How Deep is TCU at Running Back?

*TCU logjammed at running back

The O-Line isn't deep, but they return 4 starters so OSU could have a tough go of it if Paea and Henry aren't healthy. They gave up only 12 sacks last season.

They do tend to fumble the ball a little (27, 15 lost) so there's some hope there.

Looks like we need to either have some turnovers go our way or the offense needs to get rolling early to keep them off the field (2008 USC style). I just don't see us stopping this group. Slowing them may be enough if we can score 30+ points.

Defense

Chris Dufresne's college football top 25: TCU is No. 5 - LA Times

The Horned Frogs were No. 1 nationally last year in total defense and must replace All-American defensive end Jerry Hughes, and two starting cornerbacks, but there's no reason to think this unit won't again be dominant.

The stats are kinda ridiculous. Maybe that's what a 12-1 season looks like. And their conference is a bit of a walk minus 2 teams. But look at this:

Season Stats Defense:

Points Per Game - 12.8

Rushing Average Per Game - 80.2
TDs Rushing - 8

PAssing Average Per Game - 159.5
TDs Passing - 10

First Downs - 161 (12.4 per game)
3rd-Down Pct - 27%

Doesn't bode well for our rushing game. And with the 5 DB scheme they run I'm guessing any long stuff will be tough to come by. Big Joe Halahuni may be busy and Jaquizz may get most of his yards off the pass.

The Beavers passing game may need to break out in a big way to test the new DBs and prove that Jaquizz isn't our only weapon. That isn't a great plan for keeping their offense off the field, but points are always good.

Why the Beavers need to change the way they schedule

Alright, who made this schedule?

Oregon State plays somewhere between the #1 and #6 toughest schedule this season. In the first three games the Beavers play two top 10 teams in all the preseason polls. Meanwhile, the Beavs rank somewhere from 22 to 36 in those same polls. The Beavs are pushing their own Heisman Hopeful, Jaquizz Rodgers, but some pundits think that Boise State's Kellen Moore is a front-runner (OSU's third opponent).

At this point does anyone realistically think Oregon State will be better than 1-2 going into Pac-10 play? Sure, I have dreams of 3-0 and College Gameday here for the Nov. 20th USC game after we start 9-0. It could happen.

Unfortunately, that just doesn't seem to be the way it goes for OSU. Losses to Fresno St., Louisville, Boise St (twice), Cincinnati (twice), Utah, and Penn St. early in the season always seems to propel those teams to the BCS and top ten seasons. Its almost like teams poised for a break out season have to make sure they schedule the Beavs that season. Again, BSU and TCU loom large this season.

The one magical season we as Beavers fans (Fiesta Bowl, top 5 finish) was fueled by a mediocre to weak preseason schedule. We almost lost to Eastern Washington and didn't exactly pummel New Mexico. If they beat Washington (3pt loss) then they had a good shot at being in the national title game.

Boise St. and TCU have such a weak conference schedule they need to schedule big games out of conference. Anyone who runs the table in a BCS conference will be in the title game. Worst case, they could be third and thus left out. Someday we will have a playoff and it won't matter.

So I ask the question: Why schedule teams as good or better than you out of conference?

I can only come up with these reasons:

* Money
* Prepare for the tough conference games
* Increase chances to be in a BCS game
* To get them back at our house in future years for a big game
* Machismo

If you're the Beavers only #1 and #4 are valid IMO.

2000 taught me that even a weak schedule can prepare you for a tough Pac-10 schedule. Also, most years our early bad starts continued into the early Pac-10 season. Early season losses to Cal, ASU, USC, and UCLA are still burned in my memory. Clearly, the pre-season didn't help prepare us for those games.

#3 doesn't seem to matter in this age of Utah, Hawaii, Cincy, Louisville, Boise St., and TCU all getting to BCS games. You can still get a BCS game even with one loss in conference if you win your OOC games.

Here's the crux of my argument:

The current system doesn't reward tough scheduling.

If the U of O goes 3-0 in OOC (likely) this year with their weak schedule and loses one game in conference, they're going to a BCS game no questions asked. They may even have a shot at the title game.

If there isn't any benefit, then why risk it?

I'm willing to bet the short/long term money for playing in a BCS game is much bigger than one payday game in Death Valley or Dallas, TX.

Can the Beavers Baseball Team Make it Back To Postseason?

During the crazy mid-season losing streak the OSU Beavers Baseball team had I was sure that the Beavs were done for the postseason. Well, the have battled back. Luckily they had a good start to the season.

The question remains: Can they make the 64 team cut and make the postseason?

One thought is that if the Beavs don't get swept by Arizona this weekend, they're in.

Both teams should be among the 64 teams named Sunday to participate in the NCAA Tournament.

Casey said the Beavers felt they had to win two of their last four games to get in. That sounds right. If they don’t get swept by Arizona — which is 32-20 and carries an RPI of 20 — the Beavers will be at 30 wins and should be in the postseason.

However, Aaron Fitt of Baseball America thinks the Beavs need to win 2 against Arizona to make it...

Yesterday was Letter of Intent day around the nation. This is a huge event now with ESPNNews covering live announcements and blogs and tweets flying around all day.

The Beavs even got in on one of the big announcements of the day when Owamagbe Odighizuwa wore an orange shirt, gave an Oscar-style thank you speach, and then put on a powder blue and yellow UCLA cap.

What the?!?

Honestly, that is just mean to Beavers fans.

There are some very intriguing players in there. We clearly are looking to help the defense. But a few of these guys may switch if needed. D.J. Welch runs a 4.39 40 as a LB. Awesome, but if he can't put on weight he could be a safety or switch to the offense. Shaydon Akuna was a highly rated player and a great "get". Sean Mannion is big and looks good at QB.

Great 2009, Can 2010 Get Better?

2009 was a great year for Beavers Sports. Lets take stock of some of the achievements:

* Men's Basketball: a CBI tournament trophy and a .500 record for the first time in 4 years.

* Women's Hoops: make the WNIT and advance to the 3rd round, finish 20-12.

* Baseball: returned to the NCAA tournament.

* Gill Coliseum gets a face lift.

* Women's Soccer makes the NCAA tournament and beats Ohio St. and nationally seeded Florida to make the sweet 16.

* Men's Soccer: A return to winning and narrowly missed the NCAA tournament. Danny Mwanga likely 1st pick in MLS draft

* Gymnastics: Make the NCAA finals again

* Football: Another run at a Rose Bowl and another bowl game.

Overall, a pretty good year. Many sports on the rise. And anytime you can make a Rose Bowl run, its a good year. It took me a while to get over that loss though. And the bowl game sure didn't help anything.

So 2010...

Basketball is starting to look up after beating Oregon. But, wow have we lost a lot of non-conference games. I have a feeling we could have used Roberto Nelson.

But, the Pac-10 is way down this year. Anything is possible in this league. We may be able to make a Pac-10 tourney run and make the tournament. Or maybe the NIT. I'm still hopeful. What is it with OSU and slow starts?

Football is going to be VERY interesting this spring. Seems like everyone is coming back next year...except Canfield. We have a lot of talented young QBs, but they are untested. And it seems that new QBs struggle the first season they become starters. Katz has the early lead, but Lalich and Vaz will get plenty of looks.

Now that USC is in flux (although Lane Kiffen scares me because he'll do anything to win. But the program could be in major trouble in 3 years.) and many other teams are not exactly looking super strong, could the Beavs be battling Oregon again for a Rose Bowl berth in December? Oregon has to be considered the favorite right now. USC is a bit of an unknown, but they are probably #2. OSU has to be #3 pre-season, right?

Tale of the Tape - Oregon State Beavers vs. the Oregon Ducks

Seems most people think that the Ducks are going to win the Civil War. Vegas has us as 10 point underdogs. Every local poll has the 60% of the people voting that the Ducks will win. Blah, blah, blah. Is Autzen really worth 10 points?

I was looking at the stats and things look pretty even to me. On offense, we each do things a little different, but the result is basically the same. Lots of yards and points.

On defense things are surprisingly even as well. The pass defense for the Beavs is a bit scary, but it looks like the Beavs can run on Oregon. Its unlikely the Beavs will hold the Ducks under 100 yards rushing, but it does appear to be a strength again this year.

What will be the difference? Who knows, but the thing the Ducks have a clear advantage over the Beavs is creating turnovers and sacks. The Quacks have double in each of those categories (Sacks 30-15, Opp TOs 24-12). The good news for the Beavs is that the Ducks give the ball up a bunch more as well. In fact, its over twice as often (19-8).

The best hope for the Beavs is to capitalize on turnovers by the Ducks and force them into 3rd down situations (where they are only converting at 36%). Oh, and don't give up the big plays. Either that or just keep scoring all game long like Stanford did.

Civil War of the Roses!

Two weeks ago, Arizona had to lose twice and USC had to lose once for Oregon St. to have a shot at the Rose Bowl. Two weeks later, the improbable happened and the Civil War for the Roses was set. This is the biggest Civil War ever. Sure, 2000 was big, but the Rose Bowl is the Rose Bowl! I'm not old enough to remember anything before the streak, so anyone who remembers a bigger Civil War, let me know in the comments below!

The Game

I'm a believer that in the Civil War, anything can happen. Home field means something, but not everything. After that, its just two teams that REALLY want to win.

What is the formula for beating the Ducks? Here are my options:

* Outscore them (i.e. Stanford)

OR

* Don't let them get any big plays (Boise St.) and contain them on offense

OR

* Hope for an implosion on offense and don't let their defense win the game. (Purdue, Arizona, Boise St.)

Of course, the Beavers also need to do at least 3 out of 4 of these:

* Get TDs not FGs

* Limit the penalties

* No turnovers

* Force a few turnovers

Wazzu Game and Rose Bowl Possibilities

The big news after last weekend's amazing run of results (USC, Arizona losing) the Beavers have a very real possibility of making the Rose Bowl. Of course, we have to beat Oregon at Autzen to make it happen. Not an easy feat. How cool would it be to have the Civil War be for the Rose Bowl!

In case you haven't seen it, here's how the Beavs get into the Rose Bowl:

1. Beat Wazzu (Listen to the game at 2:00 pm on the Beaver Sports Radio Network)

2. Oregon or USC beats Arizona

3. Beat Oregon

That's it. So if Oregon beats Arizona today (5:00 pm, ABC) and the Beavers beat Washington State, then the Civil War is a one game playoff for the Rose Bowl. That would rock.

Here are some of the other Rose Bowl scenarios for the other Pac-10 teams still with a shot:

* Beat Arizona

* Beat OSU

OSU Women's Soccer Wins Their First NCAA Tournament Game Ever

Great game last night by the OSU Women's Soccer team! They beat Ohio State to advance to the next round of the NCAA tournament. It was nearly total domination by the Beavers as they score all of the goals in the game. Unfortunately, one of the goals was an own goal by a Beaver defender.

We had a little watching party at my house, and I haven't seen a ton of games this year but it was a very impressive showing by the Beavs. The goals were legit and the midfield domination was legit. And this was against a team that had only allow 10 goals all season!

Great job ladies and good luck against Florida on Sunday!

Cal Postgame: Canfield, Syd'Quan, Playing On The Road, and Rankings

Great win last night for the Beavers. For some reason, the team is playing really well on the road. Its actually great to see and I think it indicates a step forward for our program. Now we just need to get the fire back for home games. Fans: can we help?

What I Learned:

* Sean Canfield is a very good QB.

Take a look at his numbers:

He's gotten better at the long ball, reduced his sackability, and improved his decision making. That combined with his physical tools makes him perhaps the best QB that OSU has every had. Bold statement? OK, well he is on track to have the greatest all-around single season a QB has had in the modern era. Considering the QBs that have come through here recently, that's not easy to do.

What do you think? Will Sean leave OSU as the best QB we've seen, or am I drinking too much orange kool-aid?

* Syd'Quan Thompson is freaking awesome

He was EVERYWHERE last night. Stopping the run, breaking up passes, making amazing recoveries to stop broken plays, and even tackling James for a loss on a Fly Sweep.

I'm glad we don't have to play that dude again this year.

On The Road

We have played excellent on the road this year. I think its a hallmark of our growth as a program and indicates the talent level and maturity of the players is rising.

Think about it: our worst road game was USC. And we almost beat them. Wow.

UCLA Game Thoughts - Mistakes, Penalties, and Waking Up Just in Time

Quick thoughts on the UCLA game.

I, like most of the fans in Reser, felt that the second half was a mere formality on our way to an easy win over the Bruins. Unfortunately, it felt like the players and coaches had the same attitude.

Sure we moved the ball and racked up the yards. But we lacked a killer instinct until that last 2 minute drive to win the game. The defense was playing prevent at the end and UCLA found that their QB Prince actually can complete passes when players are open.

But, really, the season long theme of mistakes continues...

* The game wouldn't have been close if we didn't have 12 men on the field in our punt return with 3 minutes left that gave them the ball back.

* The false starts are getting a bit ridiculous. It feels like we average at least 3 a game.

* We couldn't decide if we wanted to go for it or kick a FG early in the second half. Turns out we were faking the FG. But it was 2 seconds after the play clock expired.

* The timing was off between Canfield and the receivers. And some dropped balls that really killed our drives.

* Our pass defense seems like they are covering and tackling well, but no sacks at key times and no plays on the ball gave them major pass plays of 40-50 yards multiple times in the 4th quarter.

While each of the mistakes were fairly mild at the time, they added up to another close game at home. We were overlooking UCLA a little bit. Or maybe just relaxed a bit after the flurry at the end of the 2nd half. Ultimately, it felt like we were sleepwalking through the second half.

Since we play better on the road, I expect a good showing next week. But I am concerned for the UW game. Home games have just been too close and too relaxed. And its bit us twice this year already.

A win is a win. I'm happy we pulled it out.

Near Miss At USC Makes The Rest Of The Season Very Interesting

It wasn't a pretty game for the most part, but OSU was one 3rd down stop away from having a shot to win the game at the end. With all the practice they have had this season in coming from behind, I'd like to think they had a better than average chance of scoring.

Everyone was saying that the Beavers would need to play a perfect game to win. I don't think that is case. The Beavs had 9 penalties, special teams mistakes, and an early turnover and still were in it until the end. Eliminate just one of those issues and I think the Beavers win.

No fumble in the first half? That changes the game.

No punt return for a touchdown? That changes the game.

Eliminate the penalties in the red zone and score a TD or two in the first half? That changes the game.

The interception that wasn't an interception because of a penalty? They scored after that. If we get that INT then the whole game changes. ( Anyone else notice the flag was thrown after the interception? Hmmm... Yea, I know, sour grapes. )

The offense is now looking really good. Take a look at the stats:

Canfield - 30/43, 329 yds, 3 tds, 0 ints
Jaquizz - 20 car, 113 yds, 1 td (in 3/4 of a game)
Halahuni - 9 rec, 127 yds
Adeniji - 5 rec, 81 yds, 1 td
James - 98 yds rec/rush

I think we can beat everyone on our schedule with that offense. Its more dynamic than earlier in the year and can clearly put up major points against one of the best defenses in the nation.

The defense is still a bit pedestrian. I love the secondary coming together and getting two huge interceptions. I think the linebackers are pretty good. But without any sacks, its just so hard to shut a team down. The defense is average right now. Average is OK, but if we had the same defense as last year we have a better record. Simple as that.

The defense is young/new and I've seen a lot of improvement already. But I'd like to see some more heading into the stretch.

Overall, its about encouraging as a loss can be. I have a feeling we can beat anyone remaining on our schedule. I don't know if we will, but I'm much more encouraged about the rest of the season. I'd really like to see us with only two Pac-10 losses heading into the Civil War.

How The Beavers Can Break The 50 Year Streak Against USC

I hope someday that the Beavs are in a place where we are favored in every game we play in regardless of whether its at home or on the road. That's the place the Trojans are at. But sometimes the thrill of victory is just way sweeter when you beat someone you're not supposed to beat. That can make a season. So far we haven't had a win like that this year (although ASU was a nice win).

Can Oregon State break the 50 year streak and finally beat USC at the LA Coliseum? Hey, if Stanford can, we not the Beavs?

Here's why it could happen:

1. Like last year, the Trojans are coming off of a high emotion, non-conference road game in which they won.

2. USC could be looking ahead to the Oregon game a Autzen next week which right now looks like the tougher game.

3. Even though Matt Barkley has been stellar at QB so far, he is still a true freshman. All young QBs have a couple forgettable games. USC is starting to open up their passing game. Maybe Barkley is due for a 4 INT wake up call.

4. The Beavers are starting to gel and hit their stride. The young secondary, WRs, and O-Line is improving and given the added incentive of upsetting USC could play the best game of their season.

5. JaQuizz Rodgers.

6. James Rodgers.

7. Mike Riley and staff always seems to game plan well against the Trojans.

8. USC plays a Pro-style offense that the Beavers defense is well suited to defend as opposed to some version of the spread.

9. The Beavers have been playing good football on the road and have confidence playing on the road and in tough games.

Clearly, both lines need to play very well. Its going to be about taking control of the time of possession on offense and limiting the chances that USC gets to score. An no FGs. The Beavs have to score a TD every time they are close. And they need to win the turnover battle.

Impossible? no. But, yes, they probably need to play a perfect game and hope the Trojans are just a little off of their game.

Man, I hope for a nice surprise at the end of the day today :)

What's Up With The Pac-10?

After the Beavs disposed of the Cardinal last weekend with relative ease and UW pulling out a controversial win against Arizona, things are much more interesting in the Pac-10.

Ted Miller of ESPN has blogged about the importance of this weekend in the Pac-10 - "Desperation and separation in Pac-10 games this weekend"

So what's up with Arizona? They looked great at times against OSU and UW, but let both back into the game at the end and could have been beaten by both (or won both). Are they a contender?

ASU is under the radar like OSU right now. Are they good or not? I don't know.

Can Oregon run the table? They look really strong right now. But who knows if Costa has to continue as the QB.

USC looks vulnerable, but they are clearly still very good. It feels like they might have one more loss in them though.

Stanford could pull it together, but I can't see them as a upper-tier bowl team right now.

Can UW be the surprise of the season? They are right now, but aren't they one Locker injury away from being Wazzu?

Cal and UCLA? I have no idea what they are right now.

OSU? I don't think the defense is as dominant as last season. However, as the season wears on, OSU gets better.

Wazzu? Fogettaboutit.

Basically, I know enough to know what I don't know. And all I know is that this is going to be a very interesting weekend for Pac-10 football.

BIG Win in the Desert

Anytime you can break a 40 year streak in anything, its big. Seems like ASU has been our kryptonite forever, but that was a convincing win.

That's a formula we could use for many teams that are at or near our skill level. Jump on them early, convert in the red zone, force turnovers, win special teams, and stretch the field long from time. I wish there was more consistency from the running game, but I love the long runs.

Against Stanford we have to jump out fast and score touchdowns early. No field goals. If we score TDs those first two drives against Arizona, I think we win. The D against Stanford is gonna be big. Can we force some turnovers? I don't know, but if we aren't getting sacks then we need some turnovers.

Gameday! Can The Beavs Finally Break the 40 year Drought Against ASU in Phoenix?

Every game is big in college football, but this one is really big considering the opposition coming up. If the Beavs can pull this out, they should be setup nicely for a bowl game at 7-5. A loss means we may need another Cal or Civil War win to get to that level.

What I really want to see is continued improvement. I want the new starters to start making a bigger impact. Maybe more tight end involvement. Maybe a fly sweep from Wheaton or more big catches from Bishop.

Another thing that I think we really need are some game changers. Maybe a long pass for a TD. Or a few turnovers created by the defense. Or a pick 6 from a corner. Or a return for a TD. Something that is unexpected that is a game changer. We haven't had enough of those this year. Last year we had a ton. That's the biggest difference between this year and last year to me.

Arizona Game Aftermath: Another Close Loss, Time To Figure Out How To Be Great

Here we are again. 2-2. Someday I'd love to see a 3-1 or 4-0 start. The good news is that our 2-2 starts used to include a huge blowout or two (Boise St., Cal, Cincy, etc). Now our 2-2 starts could have just as easily been 3-1 or 4-0 with a few breaks (no interceptions). Of course the UNLV game could have gone the other way too...

Other than a few bad breaks, why are we losing these games that we seemed to pull out last year? I don't pretend to know, but I know what I see.

* We don't do anything great. We're OK at the passing game. OK against the run. OK against the pass. OK in the running game. OK receiving core. OK offensive line. Bad pass rush. We're just average right now. Which isn't bad, unless you make more mistakes than the other team (-2 turnover margin against U of A. 5-0 sacks. Penalties). The good news? When you are already OK to good, its easier to improve a little to see better performance on the field. We have the athletes.

* The last two years we found a play or a player about this point of the season who was almost unstoppable. Fly Sweep, Quizz, Stroughter Punt Returns, and Slade/Victor Sacks. We need to find that player this week. Is it Moevao? Wheaton? More blitzing from the LBs? Something needs to change because we are getting nothing extra. No key turnovers. No key sacks. No long passes or runs. We have to grind everything out on both sides of the ball. Its just too hard to win consistently when all of the other teams in the Pac-10 has improved so much.

The tough part is that now we have to pull out some tough wins (probably upsets) to salvage our season. The thing that gives me hope is that these coaches and players have been here before and they know what it takes. But like the last two games, I hope they don't come up short.

Arizona Looks Great on Defense (As Usual)

One of the coolest things I have discovered this season is ESPN360. It let me watch the Arizona game last week as well as the USC/UW game. Its like Hulu for sports. The only bummer is that you can only get it with certain internet providers. Luckily Comcast is one (and my work isn't one or I'd never get anything done).

Anyways, the Arizona vs. Iowa game was an interesting game from a scouting perspective. Its hard to know how much of this is Iowa and how much is Arizona, but...

* Arizona's secondary is good. They returned an INT for a TD which was 7 of their 10 points.

* The D-Line looks pretty good too. Good pressure on the Iowa QB.

* The offense needs help. Specifically, the O-Line was beat all day. They couldn't protect and couldn't run block either.

* The QB Scott, who was benched this week, looked very green. Happy feet, not great reads, but had a strong arm and was a decent runner.

* The RB Grigsby didn't have much room to run, but when he got some room he was fast.

Unless the OSU offensive line is ready this week, the offense could struggle again. Could be a low scoring game. Hopefully our defense can come through this week and maybe score or create a few turnovers. That would be huge. An TDs, not FGs.

Cincinnati Loss - The Morning After. Reaction and Poll

This loss to Cincinnati feels less like a "sky is falling" loss than we've have the last 5 years. I think back to Boise St. x 2, Cincy '07, Cal early a few years ago, Frenso St., etc and I remember thinking that a bowl game might be tough.

This loss feels like Stanford or Utah of last year. Games we could have won (probably should have won) if the breaks went our way. We are lucky we survived UNLV. But honestly, if we had one of two things happen I think we win that game.

I think we win if the fumble was called a fumble, or if on the next play we don't let them convert that 20 yard pass for the 1st down after the huge loss. And, actually if we got a 3 and out after our failed 4th down conversion, there was plenty of time to score twice with the help of an on-sides kick. But letting them drive the field for 4 minutes killed that possibility.

Even playing our "C" game (and Cliff is right on in his report card), we could have won that game.

How painful was that TD at the end of the first half? How about that series on the 6 yard line where we went backwards twice?

The Aftermath

The post-game reaction is pretty wide ranging. Much of the blame either lands on the Offensive Line (no running game between the tackles, 5 sacks), the QB Sean Canfield (5 sacks, strange desperation plays, holding the ball too long), the play calling (nothing down field, too much Rodgers bros), and maybe the D-Line (no sacks). Some even called out everyone and their mother, including the fans. And of course, Canzano wants Moevao.

Beaver fans are clearly reeling. This isn't the post I would have written last night. I was pissed at the refs for that call, pissed at Canfield, the final play calls, the lack of push up front, and even had the thought "what if Moevao was the QB". So I feel you.

Then I remember last year. That started MUCH worse. A Pac-10 loss early? A blowout loss to PSU? A tough loss at Utah? Who would have thought we would end up one win away from the Rose Rowl? That may have been our 1 in 10 years Rose Bowl shot.

Before you jump off a bridge, take a look at this quote:

The Future

What have we learned from the non-conference schedule? Here's what I've learned:

* The secondary is going to be OK. I like what I'm seeing. The coverage, generally, was good. Sometimes excellent. This isn't going to be 2005 where we were burned 1000 times on the long routes. And, yes, we do turn around and look at the ball.

* The defensive line is good at stopping the run with Paea up the middle, but will need help from blitzing LBs and corners to really pressure the QB. I thought Ben Terry would be a monster, but that hasn't panned out yet. We are going to miss Slade and Victor.

* The offensive line is a work in progress. We lost too many top OL over the last year to not struggle. We are young and have too many walk-ons/frosh to not have issues. I trust coach Cav to make them better. Hopefully fast.

* We may have a QB controversy soon. Even though we have two senior QBs, neither is the total package. But I think both can get the job done if the running game is solid.

* We have two great players in James and Jaquizz. You win by letting your best players make plays. You can't just start not handing the ball of to Quizz or throwing the ball to James because the fans think they get the ball too much. Trust me, we want them to have the ball in their hands. Hopefully someone else emerges (TE Halahuni, WR Bishop?) this season, but if not, they are what gives us a shot to be great. Deal with it.

* The WR core is young, and could be part of the problem with the sacks and passing game. Hard for me to say definitively. Clearly we miss Morales and Stroughter. But I've seen enough good play to be excited for the future.

I know one thing from past history of Mike Riley coached teams: they will improve. And adjust. The early season schedule could be better, but its not bad.

Oct 24: at USC
Oct 31: UCLA

Arizona is winnable. Depending on improvement, Arizona St. is winnable (though we rarely win in Phoenix). Stanford is winnable. There is time to improve within that schedule.

Could Oregon State Have Invented The Spread Option?

I finally read the "Oregon State Football" book from Kip Carlson published back in 2006. Its a quick read with lots of pictures, facts, and a few good stories that was perfect for football season. My favorite part was to see the great historical photos of how the stadiums changed over the years from Bell to Parker to Reser.

Reading that book got me thinking about recent history and the newest trend in college football, the spread option. Of course, the spread option is the new trendy offense around the college football scene. Our opponents UNLV, Cincinnati, and Oregon all run it and the last two run it very well. Most defenses (especially ours of late) have tons of trouble with it because its so different. And its still very new and unique, so preparing for it can be difficult in the middle of a season.

Remember Jerry Pettibone? How about Dave Kragthorpe? Coach Kragthorpe had a pass heavy "Air Express" offense that piled up yards through the air. Coach Pettibone brought the old triple option offense to Corvallis and ran the ball and gave up the pass. Both teams ran "gimmic" offenses in an effort to turn things around at Oregon State and had some success. Granted 4-7 seasons aren't much to write home about, but it was something.

What if in an alternate universe, coach Pettibone had some foresight and kept the O-coordinator from the "Air Express" days on staff? What if they melded the philosophies of the quick passing game with the option run offense? Would they have come up with the spread option? Probably not. But what they did come up with might have revolutionized college football much in the same way that Urban Meyer did in 2002.

Can you imagine Tim Alexander in the spread option? My guess is he would have been pretty good.

I went to OSU during the Pettibone era, and effectively missed the Kragthorpe era so I don't know if it would have been like mixing oil and water. But I can't help think about the possibilities. And the missed opportunity.

It wasn't pretty, but we finally won a tough early season road game. Whew! I know the rest of Beaver Nation was ready to throw something after that incomplete pass on 3 and 26 on the final drive. Thank goodness for penalties!

Oregon State at UNLV -- How To Watch the Game

Tonight's OSU Beavers game will be televised on CBS College Sports HD, but unless you have the special sports package on Comcast or have the channel on DirectTV you will be listening to Mike Parker and Jim Wilson call the game on the radio.

If you want to watch the game on TV you have a few options:

1. Go to a bar/restaurant and watch the game. The OSU Alumni Association has a nice list of places around the country to watch the Beavs all season:

2. Stream the game online. There are a few options for online viewing on your computer.

You can purchase a month of Beaver Nation Online. It costs around $15/month and you can cancel it after your month is up. You might get another game in that time that isn't televised.

I'm not exactly sure how this relates to Beaver Nation Online, but you could get a subscription to CBS College Sports XXL which gives you even more sports and teams to watch. Again that's about $15/month. However, it appears that there is a 1 month coupon code: FREEMONTH09 (Thanks @gregkeene!). So you may get to watch the game for free that way! Just don't forget to cancel it!

3. There are other streaming options that may be available. You can check justin.tv or ustream.tv and search for feeds there. However any easily findable streams tend to get pulled at some point. Portland St. Post-game Thoughts

So after watching a half+ of the starters, did they answer the three questions?

1. How does the offensive line look?

There weren't huge holes, but Jaquizz had about a much room as last year. Actually, after that 45 yard run, maybe a little more.

No sacks on Canfield. That's good.

Not sure we have answers, but it was a good showing.

2. How's the secondary?

Good tackling from the secondary. Almost a couple of picks. That's good. But the Vikings got a lot of yards in the passing game. Most of it was underneath. Nothing too long. So we'll see. Nothing definitive yet...

3. Do the Rodgers brothers look 100%?

Clearly, the answer is YES. They looked awesome as ever.

Game Day! Time to Answer Some Questions About the Beavs

Its finally here. Football season.

First up, Portland State. There's plenty of stories and analysis on the Vikings and where the Beavers are at. I'm not really interested in who the Vikings are or the keys to the game because its less about them and more about us.

I'm most interested in how all the new pieces of the offense and defense come together.

Here's my biggest things I'm watching for:

1. How does the offensive line look?

Plenty of new starters on the O Line including a true freshman in Michael Philipp. Can they create holes for the running game? Can they protect the QB?

2. How's the secondary?

Three new players in the secondary. I consider Tim Clark a starter because he has plenty of experience. But how will the other CBs do? I like what I've seen from the safeties, but can they get it done? I love that PSU is a dangerous passing team. We shold find out quick where we are at defending the pass.

3. Do the Rodgers brothers look 100%?

Quizz and James are now the leaders on the offense. James needs to become the feature receiver and Quiz needs to pick up where he left off last season. Having both of these guys healthy all year is critical.

What are your biggest concerns? What are you hoping to see against PSU (besides a big win)

LaGarrett Blount Goes Off the Reservation - What Should the Punishment Be?

LaGarrett Blount actually didn't kick some BSU ass. Just not how we all thought he would.

Here's the end of the Oregon Ducks 19-8 loss to the Boise State Broncos last night:

Watch halfway through. He actually has to be restrained from going into the stands. Wow.

So, what should the punishment be? 1 game? 3 games? 6 games? The season?

That was pretty bad, blatant, and caught on video. If it was merely the punch, chalk it up to one bad decision. Maybe 1-3 games. But tack on the almost going into the stands (REALLY poor judgment) and the fighting with his own players and I have to think it should be at least 5-6 games. Imagine if that Coach wasn't there and he made it into the stands ala Ron Artest? Would that be the season right there? I would hope so. The fact that he REALLY tried to get into the stands has to make the suspension big. He's a menace to society!

OSU Beavers Basketball Team Given Some Love from ESPN's Doug Gottlieb

Doug Gottlieb posted an article identifying teams on the outside of Dick Vitale's Top 40 list. Two of the teams listed are Oregon and Oregon State. Unfortunately, only ESPN Insiders can see the article.

Incoming freshman Roberto Nelson is a thin but very capable 2-guard who will stretch defenses and make those cuts more open. With Gill Coliseum set to be finally redone and the energy of the biggest turnaround in college hoops at OSU's back, do not be surprised to see it in the NCAA tourney discussion."

This season is shaping up to be very similar to David Lucas' senior year. Lots of returning key players, a few good newcomers, and a go to guy down low.

Fall Camp Day 2, More Gill Photos

I went to fall camp day 2 yesterday and took a few new photos of Gill.

First a few notes on the practice:

Michael Philipp is a big guy. He looks like he could step in right now. Not sure about technique, but he is a big dude.

Stephen Paea is healthy and a total beast.

Ben Terry looks like he's ready to step in and be a force on the end.

Canfield appears to have got the timing down with James Rogers very well. Two long bombs to James in the practice for TDs. One on Tim Clark.

The secondary is a work in progess, but looked OK from what I could tell. There were not a lot of openings for the receivers.

Quizz looks great!

On to Gill Photos. Things have changed a little bit. They are flushing out the trim a bit and the back side looks like it is moving along fast.

Former OSU Soccer stars Alan Gordon and Bryan Jordan scored goals to help the LA Galaxy tie Italy powerhouse AC Milan 2-2. AC Milan is no joke and they had their stars in the game for most of the game. Ronaldinho, Inzaghi, Nesta, Di Gennaro, and Seedorf all played at least a half.

TCU beat Wright St. tonight 6-3, and that will be the Beavs next opponent.

TCU clearly has the advantage in hitting. Lots of doubles, home runs and runs. A team OPS of .988 is very good. Hopefully Tanner, Jorge or whomever starts for the Beavs tomorrow has some good stuff going. Add the home field advantage and it could be a tough road ahead.

The ERA looks better than the Aggies, but in this case it's deceiving. TCU allows more baserunners (1.37 WHIP), more runs (4.9/game), and a much higher batting average against (.268). However, they do have pretty good control and they do keep the extrabase hits down pretty well. Not sure who we will see, but it won't be their ace.

Tale of the Tape - Texas A&M / OSU Comparison

Oregon State plays Texas A&M in the first game of the TCU Regional in the NCAA baseball tournament at 12 noon PST today. The Beavs have had good luck in Texas this year (Sun Bowl, CBI) and hopefully that continues.

Texas A&M was ranked #1 in one pre-season poll so you know that they have talent. Of course, being ranked in a pre-season poll isn't always the best thing or a great indicator of anything (OSU - SI - 2001). So how did the Aggies turn out in comparison to the Beavers?

Clearly Texas A&M has the edge on the long ball. The closest Pac-10 team to their HR total was ASU with 68. But they don't hit a ton of doubles or triples despite their decent SB numbers. Perhaps that, combined with the low walk totals and high strikeout numbers, is why they scored nearly the same amount of runs per game as the Beavs (6.97 to 6.83). So despite the slightly better numbers, they are effectively as good as the Beavers on offense.

Right off the bat, the Beavs are simply allowing less runs per game regardless of being earned or not (4.17 to 4.98). That may be due to the much high opponent slugging %, or just the batting average against in general. However, both teams have very similar WHIP with OSU at 1.26 and T&M at 1.29. That means that they allow roughly the same amount of people on base. Texas A&M appears to have much better control and K's a lot more people, but the control means that they are getting hit harder than the Beavs. If OSU's bats are hot, then the Aggies will be in trouble. Otherwise, it could be a long day.

OVERALL

These teams seem very evenly matched up. Perhaps that's generally what you'd expect from a 2 vs. 3 seed matchup at a regional. Looks like its going to take a full team effort either way. The pitching and hitting need to be on. The Beavs have the edge in pitching and the Aggies is hitting. But the edge either way isn't big so anything could happen. Prepare for a nailbiter. If I had to make a prediction, I'd guess 6-5 Beavs. But that's mostly because I'm an OSU fan. Could eaily go the other way.

Do the 2009 OSU Beavers Baseball Team Have What It Takes To Make It To The College World Series?

I ran a baseball postseason poll a few weeks ago and the overwhelming winning of the poll was that the Beavers would make it back to the College World Series. 62% of the poll takers believed that at the time. Wow, talk about confidence/expectations.

Lets take a look at some numbers to see where we compare with the rest of the Pac-10:

Clearly not a great hitting year for the Beavs. If it wasn't for the Oregon Ducks, the Beavs would be last in the Pac-10 in HRs, doubles, and slugging %. However, there are some bright spots. OSU is efficient in the running game at a 75% steal rate. The Beavers are tough to strike out, they take a lot of walks, and they drive in a lot of runs despite their low power output. A .278 BA and .390 OBP is respectable.

The Beavers are 2nd in the Pac-10 in Pitching. For all the wrangling over lead-off walks and giving up early leads, the pitching is quite good. Remove the ERA portion and the Beavs compare nicely to ASU who has a very good staff. Their walks are high, but giving up way less than a hit an inning is great. Their WHIP (Walks + Hits / IP) is 1.302 whereas ASU's WHIP is 1.153. That's an OK number for the Beavs with the difference being in the extra walks given up. For comparison, the 3rd place pitching team, USC, has a 1.445 WHIP. So that's a baserunner and a half every inning. Tough to keep scores down when that gets that high.

The Beavs are 2nd in fielding (.976) and only have 44 errors on the season. That helps the pitching out a ton.

What about comparing the 2009 Beavers with the great teams of the past?

Clearly our best seasons hinged on good to great pitching. We've never really needed to be a powerhouse hitting team to be successful (including National Championship years). My only concern hitting-wise is the lack of extra base hits period. Not just HRs, but look at the doubles. Not since 2004 have we have a double total this low. And this is the first time our slugging % has been below .400. I love the low strikeout total, but we will have to address the hitting in the coming years.

The pitching is clearly getting close to the level it was at from '05-'07. So last year's horrendous pitching appears to be an aberration. That good for the future, and very good for our chances this season.

Overall, our pitching will carry us as far as it can this season. Hopefully that can be to a super regional or maybe even as far as the College World Series like the fans want.

First things first though. We have to take care of business at Stanford and win that series. Baseball America writer Aaron Fitt has said that if we win that series we are a shoo-in. There's even talk of a regional (reserve that scaffolding now :) ).

Beavers Baseball Off To A Great Pac-10 Start - Where Will They Finish?

With the sweep of Cal and a big series win over Arizona this weekend the Beavs are off to a 7-2 start to the Pac-10 season this year. Only ASU has a better record. Things are looking good again after last year and I think they are driven to make the NCAA Tournament this year. They won't let a committee determine their fate.

CBI Championship Gives Beavs A Champion Every Year Since 2006

The CBI Championship win is a big step for the Beavers basketball program. Next year is going to be the most anticipated season for men's hoops since 1990! I can't wait to see how the Freshman develop and integrate into this year's squad. The expectation has to be at least NIT.

Robinson Wants To Stay

Not only did the Beavs beat Stanford last night to move on to the CBI finals against UTEP (first game at Gill on Monday), but according to Cliff Kirkpatrick's postgame blog post we got another win:

Robinson thanked the fans again after the game. He was surprised that the crowd could be that loud. He said: “the fans are bringing basketball to Oregon State.”

For those worried about him leaving after one season, don’t. He not only said he doesn’t want to and his family doesn’t like moving around a lot, but he’s really enjoying this season.

I really hope Craig stays for a few years and builds a foundation that can carry us into a new era of OSU basketball!

For some schools the CBI is "Meh"...For Oregon State its just what they need

I can imagine for Stanford, Houston, or other schools who have been in the NCAA tournament recently that the CBI would be a downer. Its a 3rd or 4th rate tournament on the edges of the nations conscience. Does anyone get HDNet? Its the equivalent of the Seattle Bowl a few years ago.

However, for some teams its a taste of postseason play that they would never have even sniffed before. I truly think that the CBI experience will do nothing but good for the Oregon States of the world. The Beavs just need more practice, more experience, and more time to get ready for next season. That's what going to a lower bowl gives you in football. And the basketball team is getting the same thing now.

Can the Beavers beat Stanford at home again and avenge their Pac-10 Tournament loss a couple of weeks ago? What a great matchup for the Beavs in the Semis! And its Wednesday night, so great ready for another game quick!

Coach Robinson Isn't Afraid To Try Anything

After last night's win over Houston I noticed something that I've noticed before and has become something I really like about Coach Robinson. He isn't afraid to change things in game to shake things up and maybe strike lightning and get a win.

His strategy at the start of the game was clearly to go small. Three guards started with Ruland and Seth Tarver. Thats a small lineup. It worked defending the fastbreak, but we couldn't score. So we went bigger in the second half. For much of the second Omari, Ruland, Deane, and sometimes Hampton we in together. And that really worked. Sure, he couldn't predict Omari would hit 2 big threes, but all those big men caused problems for the smaller Houston players trying to score.

He went through multiple defenses, lineup combos, and offensive sets until something clicked, we went on a run, and won the game. Great job to Omari and Daniel to pull us to a victory!

Vermont on Monday! Let's get a bigger crowd this time people!

Oregon State will be playing Houston at Gill at 7pm Wednesday night! Can we fill Gill?!

Could this be the Hawaii Bowl for the hoops team? Will it give us a taste and propel the Beavers to greater things next year? Only time will tell, but for now you can get down to Corvallis and watch some postseason basketball!

The postseason appearance will be the 21st in school history as the Beavers last earned a postseason bid with a berth in the National Invitation Tournament following the 2004-05 campaign.

Houston enters the contest with a record of 21-11 on the season as the Cougars fell to Memphis in the semi-finals of the Conference USA tournament this past week. The Cougars have four players in double figures, led by Aubrey Coleman at 19.7 points per game. Kelvin Lewis ranks second on the squad, averaging 18.0 points per contest.

The meeting with the Cougars will mark only the second in series history as Oregon State captured the first and only meeting with a 63-60 win during the 1965-66 season.

Tickets for the game against the Cougars will go on sale Monday, March 16 at 8:30 a.m. The price will be $25 for a chairback and $15 for a bench seat. Students will be admitted to the contest for free and can begin picking up tickets on Monday at 8:30 a.m.

The Beavers first game of the Pac-10 tournament is tonight at 6pm on FSN. They have a chance to beat Stanford for the 3rd time this season. Wow. Think about that. Actually, just think about the crazy last few months since the season started.

I'll take you through my personal journey:

Season starts: Curious about the team, but since no major roster changes were made not very optimistic about their prospects. Would they win a Pac-10 game?

Mid-November: Beavers lose to Howard in D.C. 47-45. I caught the last 5 minutes or so on the radio and the Beavs sounded like they couldn't have gotten to "O" in a game of HORSE if they were playing some Junior High kids. At this point I almost wrote the team off.

End of November: Vaguely remember them losing to bad teams (Yale and Montana St.), not feeling good about the team.

End-December: OK, so maybe all they needed was Calvin Haynes. They are much better in December, but of course who did they play?

Jan. 2nd: Ouch. Killed by UCLA. This is going to be a looooong season.

Jan. 4th: WooHoo! We won a Pac-10 game!

Mid-Jan: Hmm, playing better but still no wins really to show for it. But the team is clearly improving. Cautiously optimistic. Trying to figure out what is going on.

End-Jan: What just happened? A four game win streak including a win over the Ducks! Awesome! Go Beavs! I was at the Civil War and I'm getting excited about Beaver Hoops now.

End-Feb: Three more wins! Top 25 Recruiting class! Robinson should be Coach of the Year! Maybe we can make the NIT!

Today: Three more losses and my enthusiasm for this season has tempered a bit. But now I'm looking forward to next year. I'm very excited. I haven't cared about Beaver hoops this much in 2 or 3 years!

I have an a card carrying Beaver Hoops supporter now. Have you drunk the kool-aid?

Hoops Civil War Tomorrow!

OK, I admit it. I'm bummed that I don't have the chance to write:

Congrats to the Ducks for avoiding the dubious distinction that the Beavs did last season. But...

Would going 1-17 this season be worse than 0-18 last season?

From my point of view, the Pac-10 is worse than last year. Last year may have been the best collection of teams in the Pac-10 ever. All of the elite teams from last season (UCLA, USC, U of A, WSU, Stanford, and Oregon) are all worse than last year. Some more than others, but still. Of the improved teams (UW, ASU?, OSU, Cal) only a couple will probably make the tournament.

So who had the harder schedule? Would this years Duck team beat anyone in conference other than the Beavs? Would the Beavs of last season have beat this years Ducks at least once?

I think if the 08-09 Ducks team was transported to last season, they would have tied the Beavs at 1-17.

Nice comeback win against the Cougs last night. Man, our offense is like a good running game. Before you know it, there's no time on the clock and you don't have time to win the game. Assuming things are clicking of course. If Ruland and Haynes can get hot again down the stretch, we may have a good shot at winning a couple more games. Too bad we let that WSU game get away earlier in the year.

Anyone know what the deal was with Omari Johnson? Was he sick or hurt?

The Beavers must have racked up some frequent flier miles over last year. Perhaps by necessity, but definitely by design the OSU coaches now recruit to the south, southwest, mountain west, california, and the northwest (of course). After seeing the wide area that Oregon State got their recruits, it got me thinking. What do other schools in the Pac-10 do? What is the Pac-10's effective recruiting area?

Beaver Basketball: What Exactly Do We Have Here?

After the first road sweep in 16 years and three wins in a row something feels like it might be happening. Its definitely an event you can't ignore. Even in the last winning season in '04-'05 we only won 1 road game. So what is going on? Is it the crazy 1-3-1 defense? The offense that leads to layups? The breakout of Ruland and Calvin? Yes.

I thought I'd take a look at StatSheet.com and see if I can figure out what were doing better and maybe that would help explain if this is a trend or just a hot streak.

Our FG % is pretty high compared to the last few seasons. 47.4% seems pretty good to me. Our opponents are at 44.9%. This is the highest FG% we have shot for the last 12 years. That's pretty awesome. Hopefully that's the extra layups and not just some hot shooting.

Our 3 point FG% has gone back to respectable levels and 34.2%. Our opponents are shooting virtually the same. You can see why we we so good in '04-'05. We hit at an awesome level from 3. And apparently we defended the 3 very well.

Our Offensive Efficiency rating (Points per 100 possessions) is 95.8 in Pac-10 play and 101 overall. That's ninth in the Pac-10. Squarely between the '05-'06 and '06-'07 seasons. In '04-'05 we were 6th in the league. Basically, this measures how well we are using the chances we get.

We have actually lowered the number of turnovers per game in conference play. Down to 12.5 from 14. And we have marginally increased our steals.

Well, nothing in the numbers stands out a ton from previous mildly successful years. If we continue our recent trends and keep our efficiency, FG%, and 3PT% up then we should have a chance in nearly every game the rest of the way. Our rebounding, FT%, and Opponent's Efficiency will costs us a lot of games.

I like what I'm seeing and I'll be following intently the rest of the way. I'm bringing a big group to the Civil War game this weekend!

Beavs Make Huge Comeback, Beat Cal on the Road

Whoa. Big win! First road win in the Pac-10 in like forever. Imagine if we had beat WSU...

I started listening with 10 minutes left in the second half. That was the low point. Down 11. From that point Cal made one 30 footer. That's it. The defense, rebounding, and free throw shooting was really clutch.

Great job Beavs! Now go beat Stanford!

Beavers Hoops Beats USC! Snaps 21 Game Pac-10 Losing Streak

The Beavers won this game with defense, some good patient offense, and a couple great individual efforts at key moments of the game.

First, that 1-3-1 zone was perfect. It may not work every night but it was key. By pushing their guards way out past the 3 point line they were removed as a threat. Plus, they couldn't directly enter it into the post. So each play there were really only three legitimate threats each time out. Plus, the Beavers were working hard to prevent drives and getting caught too many times out of position. Great strategy by coach Robinson.

Second, the offense was working well. It seems like everyone gets their role and are really looking to attack the defense with back-cuts and passing. Plus, people were hitting their threes when they were open. I could see how this offense could really work here.

Third, three huge offensive plays sealed the game. Ruland's 3 to send the game into OT was big. He was open and was feeling it. Then the play of Calvin Haynes at the end of the game and in OT. He looked like a poor man's Brandon Roy on those last two layups. Setup the pick and roll and drive to the hoop. He is the key to the team right now.

Why the Beavers Won the Sun Bowl

Two out of three ain't bad. I didn't expect that low scoring of a game, but hey we'll take it. 3-0 is a crazy score. And frankly a bit of a bore. At least until the end when I was hoping the Beavs would hang on.

The defense stopped the run and forced them to pass. Then we proceeded to attack the QB until he submitted. The wind obviously was a factor early, but while Lyle got better, Stull didn't. And their receivers and O-line weren't really helping. I'm not sure Pitt has seen a defensive line like OSU's all year ;).

Stroughter stepped up and was really our only go to guy in the first half. Shane picked it up and did well too. Chris Johnson had a nice game as well. Once the wind died down a bit Lyle and the passing game really got going. Minus a sack or two and we would have kept more drives alive.

And hey, Jeremy Francis had a nice game in the second half and we ran well enough to gain some yards and change things up from the pass. Good for him. I glad he came back and I hope we see him next year. I hope McCants works on his vision in the off-season. That's the only thing holding him back.

I'm going to miss Slade Norris and Victor Butler. Definitely two of my favorite players the last couple of years. I hope we can get Kuli in or someone else to go with Ben Terry because we need that 4 man pass rush.

Beavs end up 9-4 and another great season under our belts. Now if we can finally start off strong next year, maybe we can make another run at the Rose Bowl!

Why the OSU Beavers Will Win the Sun Bowl

All signs point to the Beavers having a tough game against Pitt in the Sun Bowl. Since Quizz and James Rodgers aren't playing, who account for 50% of our offense, how can we get it done? Did the Beavs get exposed against Oregon?

Here's why the Beavers will win.

1. The Defense. The defense must be angry about the Duck game. They will want to prove they are better than they showed in that game. Plus, Pitt isn't the offense powerhouse that UO seemed to be in that game. And they don't play the spread.

If the Beavs can stop McCoy from running wild and force Pitt to throw, then I'm not sure Bill Stull can lead them to victory alone. Their receiving core is a mish-mash and Stull has thrown for under 200 yards passing in 4 of his games this season. He is not mobile so Butler and Norris can pin their ears back and come hard. And he has 9 interceptions to go with his 9 TDs.

2. QB/TE/RB play. The running game could be a struggle. But I think the bulliten board material from Pitt should give the O-Line extra motivation to open up holes.
However, I think that will mean more passes to tight ends and RBs on screen plays, seam routes, and swing routes. It might start to look like the Insight Bowl out there. And we have the TEs to do it.

If the offense can get ahead early and force the clock to become somewhat of a factor, then Pitt will have to throw. We can't shorten the game by running every other play like we could with Quizz. Generally, that's bad because it gives offenses more chances to score on us (Oregon, Penn St., Stanford). But I think in this case, I'm not sure Pitt can throw like all of those other teams. Its hard to come back when you're running the ball.

3. Sammy Stroughter. He's the last big star player left on the offense that isn't on the line or at QB. If he could return a punt or a long TD. That would help a ton. Maybe a fly sweep? Its his last game and he could go out on top if he has a great game.

If the defense and QBs are solid, I think we win. Ultimately, it will probably be the team who makes the fewest mistakes who wins. No missed tackles, bad penatlies, or turnovers. It will be a tough game, but I think Mike and the crew can game plan to win this thing. Plus, with James and Quizz out, Pitt won't really know what to game plan for defensively. The Beavs haven't played without either in 2 years. Hopefully, that can give some element of surprise and the Beavs can take advantage.

The Civil War: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Well, that sucked.

I seriously thought we could pull it out with just one defensive stop or the ball bouncing our way once or twice in the 4th quarter. It didn't. We lost. They basically played a perfect game.

I know the game wouldn't have gotten so out of hand if we had Quizz because we would have run the clock down a ton in both halves. Maybe stay in it long enough to pull it out. Without a running game we played right into their hands. Before the game I knew that if the game was a shootout, the we would lose. For us to win it needed to be about 28-24.

I could complain about bad calls or bad bounces, but it probably wouldn't have changed too much. We needed to get ahead early and force them to throw to catch up. Oh well. Next year we get the bye before the Civil War.

The Good:

Not sure what to say here. I guess the fact that we kept scoring and keeping it just close enough to have a slim chance at the end.

The Bad:

The turnovers killed us. 2 TDs off of interceptions. A lost fumble on the 10 yard line. And not getting the interceptions or fumble recoveries when we had a chance.

The Ugly:

The defense. To many big plays. Every other drive ended in a 70 yard run it seemed like.

Final Note:

In the future, lets keep the Civil War civil please. I brought my brother-in-law to the game and he happens to be a Duck fan. Coming back after halftime he was subjected to some comments that were out of line. Questioning his sexuality and using a racial slur is just ridiculous. It made me embarrassed for Beaver Nation. Now I know its the 1% of wackos that every team has and it was probably a couple of drunk students. But that is NEVER called for. And shouldn't be accepted. Lets make it 0% next year OK?

Beavs Beat Arizona, Thousands of Beaver Fans Pass Out

Holy crap.

There was one point that I thought we were going to win. After we fly sweeped to out first TD after the half. I thought, "here we go". Unfortunately, Arizona didn't cooperate. Frankly, I had no idea how we would pull that game out with our second string at two key skill positions. But we did. That was a program win if I ever saw one. No Lyle? We can still win. No Quizz? We can still win. Banged up D-Line? We can still win.

Was that the best snatch victory from the jaws of defeat win or what! Wow!

Looking at the numbers after this one, a few things stand out...

* Defensively, we slowed down their passing game:

Willie Tuitama, 16/22, 158 YDS, 1 TD
Rob Gronkowski 3 REC, 50 YDS
Mike Thomas 6 REC, 50 YDS

Gronkowski wasn't much of a factor catching the ball. The TD was big, but he didn't kill us like I thought he might. Mike Thomas made some big catches. And Willie made some huge throws. They really threaded the needle on some of those passes. But no long passes which really helped. And no big returns for Thomas.

Unfortunately, their running game got rolling and they kept us off balance with their fly sweeps and pitches. That needs to get better by the Oregon game.

* Offensively, we still figured out a way to run the ball without Quizz:

James Rodgers 10 CAR, 102 YDS

I was having flashbacks to 2007 with Francis looking like Yvenson Bernard out of the backfield catching balls and James running the fly sweep to perfection. Ryan McCants is a big dude and ran very hard especially in the second half. He is going to be a good RB for the Beavers the next 3+ years. 166 yards is great. We weren't as consistent as we would have been with Quizz, but it got done and that is all that matters. I really hope I see Ryan break a big run against the Ducks. I know he can.

* How about the "just enough" passing game. Sammie was the star last night!

Sean Canfield 20/32, 224 TDS, 47 LONG, 1 TD

Sammie stepped up and showed why he is the man! I love these Beavers. Sean put together another solid performance and I'm am so glad we have 2 good QBs. That 47 yard pass to Sammie was money.

``The comeback was big,'' Canfield said. ``We knew what we had to do and everyone chipped in and we never backed down.''

Amen to that.

I watch the Duck v. Arizona game last weekend and I noticed that they seem very similar to the Beavs. Small running backs, good QB, decent recievers, and a tough D.

Surprise! Oregon Changes Their Uniforms (again)

I guess at this point its not surprising that the Ducks would change their uniforms yet again.

Hmmm. Even more black. Maybe they're trying to get some late season mojo from the Black & Orange.

Oops. My bad. Got confused by the black. Boy, they do look a lot like the Beavers uniforms, huh.

They even have a new black flag.

I'm watching the Duck/Arizona replay and when I saw those feathers on their shoulders I was REALLY hoping that when they turned around they would have some feathers on their ass. Tailfeathers would be hilarious. Really, other than the feathers, the uniforms are pretty plain. I'm good with plain, but the Oregon color guy just said they look like they could have got them at K-mart(!). Of course, that was after he just got done saying Terence Scott is one of the best receivers in the Pac-10, so I took it with a grain of salt.

Maybe the Beavs should roll out some armored tails or buck teeth on their helmets.

Are the students doing a "blackout"? Really? Wow. Deep down somewhere, I think Phil Knight is a Beaver and he's just f-ing with the Duck fans. At this rate the Ducks will be having Orange highlights in their uniforms by spring practice and an Orange out next November.

Beavs Beat Cal, Keep Dream Alive

Great game, great win.

The Beavs are finding ways to win through defense and now special teams. What an awesome kickoff return for James Rodgers. He was so fast that he was 20 yards ahead of everyone at the end! That kicker looked like he was standing still.

Great game Defense. Great game Quizz (again). Great game fans. We were loud. As loud or louder than USC. I love the new "hua!" at the end of the first down song. Man, the Civil War is gonna be crazy! I really hope we beat U of A so that game is for all the marbles!.

Couple of post-game thoughts:

* Johnny Hekker is growing up fast and looks like he's gonna be a good one.

* Moevao looked a bit rusty, but he looks like he can make the throws now and he should get his rhythm back soon.

* Sammy was huge! I loved the "Sam-my!" chant for each punt return.

* I knew Kevin Riley was screwed at the end after he threw the interception that didn't count (false start). But to get the exact same result on the net play? Whoa!

* Finally the fly sweep started working again. That was sweet.

* The blocking was huge! Especially loved those upfield blocks from receivers and running backs even.

* I taped and re-watched the game. I think that announcer said RB about 52 times.

Another HUGE game next week. I think there's going to be a lot of Beavs there. Come on Beavs!!!

That was a great win against UCLA even if the FSN feed kept pooping out all game. And we had radio only for the first quarter.

I don't think there's a QB controversy. Whoever is most healthy should play.

Cal is going to be tough. Especially defensively. They look pretty good on defense.

Arizona State Aftermath

Whew! That was a heart-stopper of a game.

Great job Canfield, Quizz, James, Kahut, Sammie, Morales, the O-Line, and the bend-but-don't-break defense.

Boy did ASU play the role of villain well. They were pumped and ready to play, that's for sure. Hate to say it, but they looked a bit like Miami of the Southwest.

I don't fault them. They needed to do something different after losing 5 straight and playing with a lot of emotion and swagger almost worked. They were taunting the Beavs as they ran out on to the field. They were dancing on the sidelines during timeouts. They were running across the field to the Beavers sideline. They acted a bit out of control and certainly brought back memories for me. Oh how far we have come.

How exactly is there no ejections when 15 or so players ran across the field to challenge the other team?

Back to the Beavs...

I think this game is huge because if we win big, we lose to UCLA. Now I think the guys will get grounded and realize that they could lose at any time and they really do have to take it one game at a time.

UCLA is net and if we could get that monkey off our back, that would be very big. Every game is big and every game is a battle from here on out. One game at a time.

The weather is looking mixed. It was really nice for the homecoming parade, but now its raining. Hopefully it won't be as bad as the Cal v. Oregon game is. Of course, that could actually help us a lot since we run the ball well and they don't.

A Look At The Stretch Run

OK, so the Beavers passed the trap game test. And we now have a road win. So where does that put us for the rest of the season?

This may be one of the hardest seasons to predict in Pac-10 history. I watched Arizona beat up on Cal in the second half of their game last night. Will the real Arizona please stand up? For that matter will the real ASU, Cal, and Oregon please stand up. Inconsistency is the only thing that is consistent about the upper tier teams this weekend.

OK, so we've gotten through the easiest stretch of our season and head into a bye before the stretch run.

What's next?

Arizona St.

Coming off of a bye week and it being in Corvallis, I think this is a winnable game. They are only averaging 334 ypg and 84 ypg on the ground. Of course, even with our experienced secondary we can still give up yards passing. Hopefully the bye week will help us figure things out. The defense gives up 143 ypg on the ground which can only help us. If we can pressure Rudy and run the ball, thus shortening the game, then we win.

UCLA

Another road game and we seem to have a lot of trouble beating UCLA the last few years. They are the team we just can't seem to beat. This could be a tough game. They aren't great offensively, but seem to pull out crazy wins and keep things close. They will also have a bye before meeting us which is scary. However, if there's a year to beat UCLA on the road, this is it. If we're a good team, we should win this game.

California

This is a scary game. They also seem to beat us in Corvallis and are pretty good this year. They are beatable, but they have a lot of talent on that field. Can we do it? Yes. Will we do it? I don't know. They give up 109 ypg on the ground so Lyle and James will need to be on this game. This game will determine whether we have a shot at a good bowl berth or not.

Arizona

On the road. Great defense. Scary. Its a game we could win but unless Tuitama gets hurt, it may be anther Utah type game. Very tough and they will be up for us. Too tough to call, but the game scares me.

Oregon

Can they throw? If not, they will be in trouble. Its still too early to call, but its looking to be a classic as both teams will be good again. Man, I want 3 in a row.

Our chances are good, but this is a tough road ahead. This could be special!

Husky Game - Review Of The 2007 Debacle

It took a while to shake the Husky bug for us Beavers. Even in our greatest season (2001) we lost to the Huskies. It wasn't until Alexis Serna came along that we really started to beat UW. Now we're on a 4 game win streak.

So can we bring back Serna? How about a look-alike from the soccer team? Probably don't need him this year.

The only reason this game remotely gives me pause is:

A) Its a road game

B) The Huskies have been wanting to get us back for last year

C) They may just get pumped up enough to start out fast

Can we make sure we don't get those refs from last year?

Looking again at that hit, it really wasn't bad. He was just trying to wrap Locker up and Jake put his helmet down into a dangerous position. Jake was the one leading with the helmet.

It feels like its been forever since the Beavers have had a game. All I want to see today is the same determination that we've had the last three weeks along with better execution. Just keep getting better and make a statement like we did against Hawaii. Don't give them a chance.

Utah Shocks OSU, Special Teams Still a Problem

Skocked. I can't believe we lost that game. It felt exactly like a midseason game of the last two years where we take a few shots and come out victorious in the end. Well, maybe Alexsis Serna was the reason for that.

The kicking game hurt us bad in that game. Missing an extra point is almost unforgivable. And that sent us on a spiral of 2-point tries that were unsuccessful (which by the way I hope we never do again.). There could have been redemption by hitting a 42 yard field goal in the second half (almost automatic for Serna), but nope.

I think the coaches have to take a little blame on this one. Going for two twice was not necessary. In fact, make one of those extra points and we're up by one and they might have onsides kicked or at least we would have had the opportunity to run the clock out with one first down. Also, the final drive clock management was poor. Just get to OT. Why give them enough time to drive down and get a FG? Especially when you know our punter isn't going to rip off a 60 yard punt. I mean, we were on the 20! Are we going to drive 80 yards (or 60 for a FG) on that defense in 90 seconds?

And to the Ute fans who rushed the field, get over yourselves. You narrowly missed being upset on national TV. You're #15, you should win games at home against unranked opponents. Just because you beat the team that beat USC doesn't mean you beat USC. That might be the worst reason to rush the field in college fooball history. Way to go Ute fans, you proved you're not one of the "big boys". In big boy football we only rush the field when we beat someone in the top 10 in the nation (and we're not in the top 10).

I can't believe we lost that game.

Jake Locker Wants To Play Defense and OSU v. Utah

However, Locker might be able to return more quickly as a safety, linebacker or tailback, and UW football coach Tyrone Willingham did not rule that out Monday. “It is possible,” Willingham said. “I couldn’t tell you where right now, but I think I said, and others have said, that he is a tremendous athlete with the ability to play five, six, seven positions.”

If Coach Willingham plays his best player on defense, he is crazy. In fact, even if he's not fired immediately (and its pretty clear that he's probably gone after this season) will he have any chance of being hired elsewhere?

I say no.

This isn't 1960 when people played both ways full time. This is 2008 where Jake Locker is not only an NFL prospect, but an MLB prospect. He stands to lose his future livelyhood if he gets unlucky and say injures a shoulder, elbow or rotator cuff by doing something as simple as making a tackle.

Don't do it Ty. Its a career killer.

Oregon State at Utah. Most prognosticators are calling a Utah win. The line is Utah to win by 10-12. All of that is good for the Beavers. We will not overlook Utah. Rather than over-confidence from a big win all we will get is confidence.

Does that mean we win? I don't know but I think our chances are good. Its going to be a battle. If we can continue the strong defense and not succumb to the inevitable trick play, then we should be able to keep it close. Brian Johnson is a little proned to interceptions. That would be big if we could get an INT or two.

I can't wait for this game!

OSU 27, USC 21: Our #1 is Better Than Your #1

What a night, what a game. This was nearly total domination in the first half. This was taking their best shot and coming back and winning anyways. This is a HOME WINING STREAK against USC!

This one feels different than 06. I can't tell if I'm more in shock or find it less hard to believe. The hype was so huge about USC that I figured lightning couldn't strike twice. Plus, we started so slow in the season. But I'll be damned, we're hitting our stride early this year. The Utah game is big next week.

Can I get a "I heart Quizz Rodgers" shirt up in here?! Dude never went down on the first hit. He made nothing plays into 5 yard gains, OK plays into 10 yard gains, and frustrated the USC 'D' all game. This wasn't trickery, this was up the gut, in your face, I'm better than you game plan. I LOVED IT. Our best play was up the gut. Everyone was blocking lights out. James Rodgers was sealing awesome for the cut-back, I saw Sammie level Ellison on one play, and even Quizz was pass blocking great.

If we win next week, win all our games in October, then we could be setup for a magical stretch run in November with the best teams at home and when we are at our best. Maybe a 2000 type run?! Damn, I sound like a Duck fan.

There are still about 4,000 general admission tickets left to purchase for the game. They are the $75 variety. All the club seats are sold out.

So the students line up around the block to pick up tickets, but Beaver Nation has left 4000 gen admin tickets on the table? For USC? The #1 team in the nation?

I guess there are more pessimists in Beaver Nation than I thought. Who cares if we lose big. We're expected to as evidenced by the 25 point spread. But would you want to miss beating a #1 for the second time ever? Or how about having a home winning streak against SC?

Come on people. Get your butts in the stands and watch this game!

Sometimes Bye Weeks Are Great For Fans Too

The Beavers had a nice weekend to relax, heal, and prepare for USC this week. That can only be good when coming off of an easy win last weekend. Hopefully the coaches see something in the film they can exploit. And hopefully our defense has become experienced and confident enough to take a shot at the best team in the conference.

Sometimes bye weeks are good for the fans too. We get to do some errands, yard work, and watch the other teams around the league/nation. This week I watched the most Oregon football I've seen since Civil War last year. My only complaint about the UO vs BSU game is that the Broncos let the Ducks back into it. BSU was in total control at the end of the 3rd quarter. Although that new freshman did look pretty good in the pocket. Of course, the way Duck QBs go down it only a matter of time.

After watching OSU lose to Boise St. twice on the road over the last few years (then having to hear Duck fans talk about it) that game made the bye week a little better. Hell, a lot better. I'm still smiling. Just remember Duckies, we never lost to the Broncos at home.

Weekend Recap...Defense - check...Forced Turnovers - check...Blow Out - check

I went to the game last weekend and despite it being the hottest football game in recent memory, it was a pretty good game to get Beaver Nation's hopes up for USC.

When I walked into that stadium I wanted to see a few things from the Beavs. Better defense, force defensive turnovers, better special teams, and domination.

Three out of four isn't bad. Id say other than the first drive, our defense was great. The interceptions were huge because we're gonna need those in the next two games. And by dominating a lesser team (like we should have done vs. Stanford) we got back some confidence and maybe a touch of swagger that we sorely need against USC. The special teams were a mixed bag. Great return phase. Not so great on the kicking side of things.

On to a bye week, then USC. And boy do they look good. Our only hope is that they come in overconfident and we get 3-4 early breaks and we capitalize on them. If we can keep it close and build momentum for Utah, that is the key. We need to take down Utah like we did Cal last year. That could be the lynchpin if this season. Especially since many teams are looking vulnerable in the Pac-10 (and some downright bad). Man, I wish we could play Stanford again.

Penn St. Rolls Beavers

Well, I was afraid that this would happen. The Beavers go back east again and play the part. It doesn't matter if its an up and coming team like Boise St, Fresno St, or Cincinnati (maybe Utah?) or an established power like LSU or Penn St. The Beavers have only played competitively in maybe 2 games on the road against decent out of conference teams in the last decade.

I'm beginning to think this early season slow start thing is a self-fulfilling prophesy. If people (press, fans) are always asking about how you're going to start fast and why do you start slow, then you start to believe it. And it becomes a wall for the players and maybe worse, the coaches.

Conservative game planning may not be the way to break the cycle. Perhaps we need to shake things up a bit. Throw the ball down field. Have a drive where all you do is fly sweep and run sweep. Go for it on 4th down. Fake punt. Blitz like crazy.

Or maybe the anwser is to just schedule weaker. Only get teams you can go home at home. Kansas went to a BCS game with a weak schedule. We went in 2001 with a weak OOC schedule. When you play all 9 other Pac-10 teams, do we really need to schedule another BCS opponent? Why not get Minnesota or Vandy to play us?

No matter what the Beavers come home this weekend. Let's make sure they get this win because we need some momentum to pull off our game 5 upset that we always seem to do. Be loud and ready to cheer on a win. Its early. The good thing about our self-fulfilling prophesy is that every also tells us we finish strong. The players and coaches believe it and they can do it with the schedule that we have.

Preview, Game 2: No. 19 Penn State vs. Oregon State - Zombie Nation

Why PSU will win -- The rushing game: If Stanford can rip off 210 yards against Oregon State, then Penn State shouldn’t have too much trouble. But this week, PSU has to be ready for a team that’s no Coastal Carolina. OSU has won at least nine games two years in a row, and won its last two bowl games. But OSU did lose to Stanford. Penn State will need to keep the ball as long as possible this week, with the suspensions on defense. Special Teams: It’s supposed to rain, a lot. If so, this one can come right down to the special teams play. I’m guessing Kevin Kelly will hit one of two this week, but the return games and punting will be stellar. Even if AJ Wallace doesn’t play (I think he will), Penn State should enjoy great field position on a soggy field.

Why OSU will win -- Turnovers: Get Penn State out of its groove early, and this one could go Oregon State’s way in a hurry. And now with the PSU suspensions, OSU will be looking for every way to take advantage. With slippery conditions possible, look for the OSU defenders to constantly rip for the ball. I’m not sure OSU can go toe-to-toe with PSU if it turns into a shootout, but the Beavers would love for it to come to that. The Passing Game: Oregon State was reduced to chucking the ball around once behind at Stanford. This week, Mike Riley already said the key will be balance. But I really think the balance for OSU will come from the passing game. Get the PSU secondary nice and soft, then send a few runs right at the depleted PSU defensive line. It’s a tough task, even if the PSU defense will be watered down, but not entirely impossible.

What will happen: I just don’t see PSU losing this game. But OSU will scare the hell out of PSU fans. Once PSU pulls away from a tight game, ESPN will talk more about the recent off-the-field issues, instead of the game itself. Daryll Clark will look great again, but the running game will be even better. The defense will be surprisingly stout, but not by PSU standards. The PSU wideouts will shine.

Prediction: No. 19 Penn State, 38 - Oregon State, 24
